3 Verifiable Lies: didn't sell the plane on ebay, didn't fire the chef, wasn't against The Bridge:
Here are the links, in case you want to torture your rightwing relatives with them.

1. She did not sell the jet on ebay http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/sale-of-alaskas-state-jet-on-ebay-revealed-as-a-lie-922493.html

2. She didn't fire the chef http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Alt/alt.politics/2008-09/msg00614.html

3. She was not against the Bridge to Nowhere, nor did she 'stop' it http://www.reuters.com/article/vcCandidateFeed7/idUSN3125537020080901

24. That's a bigger lie than the above three put together
At the convention, and every day since on the stump, Palin has told a phenomenal lie that few seem to be picking up on. She told a national TV audience that under her leadership as Governor, she concluded a deal to have a trans-Alaska natural gas pipeline built that would constitute "the largest private infrastructure project IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES". That sounds really impressive, but on closer scrutiny, Palin didn't conclude a deal at all. The state legislature merely authorized a license or permit for a private company, TransCanada to be able to build the pipeline if they choose to do so and if they can get the funding. There's no contract and no committment. The pipeline may never be built and, even if it is, it probably wouldn't be completed for another 10 years. There's no deal and, in sum, it's another major whopper told by Palin. The article on this was up on RawStory yesterday.

30. A lot of people here don't like that pipeline anyway.
From what I understand, the natural gas was going to be piped to Alberta for use in their tar sands petroleum extraction. We're not sure why Sarah and the legislature (including the Dems) thought this was a good idea. Why is it a logical for our resource to go to Canada when people here are paying sky-high prices for energy? It doesn't make sense to me.

3. She didn't say she sold the jet on e-Bay! She didn't say she fired the chef!
I quote from her speech:
"That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay." and

"And I thought we could muddle through without the governor's personal chef - although I've got to admit that sometimes my kids sure miss her. I came to office promising to control spending - by request if possible and by veto if necessary."

She did not say SOLD or FIRED.

I detest her. I'm not sticking up for her. But just an example how things get mis-stated, and repeated throughout the media.

5. Umm, so why'd she mention Ebay then---yes, to imply she sold it there.
Hello? Why else mention Ebay at all?

She said she was controlling spending in the same breath she said they could "muddle through" without the personal chef, yet IT SAVED NO MONEY. read the link

These are LIES nonetheless and you know it. And she knew it when she was speaking them.

6. Agree, but my point was the various press picked it up, and mis-quoted her
and it went around the world as what she said, even if it was only implied. And the point is that the same thing happens to things that Obama says--they're distorted and imply things he did not say.

There is a big difference and those who know ebay (esp. concerning big ticket items) understand exactly what she said.

34. Maybe John McCain should pick someone without having only one meeting with them.
That's the real underlying structure here. She clearly constructed her lines so that it would be just this side of legal, but highly unethical and intentionally deceptive in context, while he didn't even get that memo.

He thought not only was the plane put up, but sold at a profit, thereby cementing the theme of Palin as heroic reformer. The same guy who keeps mistaking Sunni for Shia. Can't remember his positions on any number of issues except that he 'probably agrees with the President'. Self-admittedly has no handle on the economy. What is someone like this? Nicely put- out of touch.

18. Yes, they know how to craft the words so they leave an impression
but can then parse them later and whine about how they didn't SAY that. When all along they know what they are doing. Lying.

Like a teenager caught lying by omission is what it reminds me of.

31. In fairness, on the eBay thing,
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 12:50 AM by Blue_In_AK
she really did try to sell it on eBay a couple of times before she was forced to go through the broker. Frank's jet was extremely unpopular here because we already had ways to transport the prisoners to Arizona -- the alleged reason for its purchase -- and Frank Murkowski WAS using it as his personal transportation at state expense. One of Sarah's campaign promises was that she would get rid of that jet, and she did. They're puffing this up, of course, for campaign purposes, but it was a good move on her part to dispose of it -- no matter how it was finally done.

33. My response,
equally 'fair' I hope. In the cold, hard world of politics you don't get points for effort, only for results. She sold it at a loss to the original asking price, effectively losing the state revenue. So she can still have the claim of reformer if she likes, just an ineffective reformer, at least in this case.

The person who it was finally sold to, Larry Reynolds, also is now asking for $50,000 in maintenance fees from the taxpayers of Alaska.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/sale-of-alaskas-state-jet-on-ebay-revealed-as-a-lie-922493.html

And there are still things coming out about this story, it may be nothing, but I wouldn't walk away just yet. Like the fact that Reynolds made campaign contributions to Palin. Could be innocent, or as innocent as it gets in politics, or it could be the faint end of a thread that pulls away something larger.

10. When she said she fired the chef, my instinct
was to feel sorry for the chef.

Having seen enough of overbearing bosses firing deserving people, my feelings instantly went out to the unemployed chef.

The ebay thing didn't phase me really. I knew that she had placed the jet on ebay only to not sell and later be sold by a broker. So I guess when she said "she put it on ebay", while not sounding true or false, didn't trigger any instincts.

43. Just a general comment on this thread.
On one hand I'm heartened that people on our side are willing to give such benefits of the doubt to the other side (against the facts here IMO) and are so committed to getting it right.

Now for the bad part. Take a visit to the dark side. Little such commitments or gestures of sportmanship exist. Our side follows the motto, 'if your opponent trips, help him up', their side is 'if your opponent trips, take a shovel to the back of his head.'

Their only question is not whether or not something is true, but will we get away with it and will it be effective? Can't find a link between 9/11 and Iraq? Find a stooge who'll say it's true, even though everyone is telling you he's a stooge. Make war, extract wealth, shred papers, retire.

I am still on the side of truth, but whatever you think of this, not primarily for reasons of nobility. We simply don't have the ability to get away with anything. We don't have the paid whores, and we could get never get everyone to agree to telling the same lie. For them, just go to the printer, get talking points and regurgitate.

It's a bittersweet thing, really.
