Senate Dems boot Lieberman from weekly party meetings
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 12:22 PM by kpete
The Hill:

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) will not attend the Democratic policy lunches in the Senate this month, the latest sign that he is moving away from the party after criticizing Barack Obama at the Republican National Convention.

"I think it's probably wise for me and for my colleagues in the Democratic caucus to dine somewhere else for the next few weeks," Lieberman said in an interview with The Hill.
http://thehill.com/campaign-2008/lieberman-to-skip-dem-lunches-2008-09-09.html

....................

That, my friends, is called damage control. Because we see what really happened, courtesy of the subscription-only Roll Call:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has decided that Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-Conn.) — one of Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) top supporters — can no longer attend Democrats’ weekly caucus lunches or the biweekly chairmen’s lunches used to formulate policy, senior Democratic aides said Tuesday.

The decision comes in the wake of Lieberman’s attacks on Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) at the GOP convention last week, and essentially formalizes a deal Reid and Lieberman had cut earlier this year under which Lieberman would not attend meetings that included discussions of sensitive campaign or political issues.

12. To be fair...
Lieberman is a horribly boring piece of crap and a lousy campaigner. He makes people dislike those he speaks with and for. To have him out stumping for McCain prior to the convention was good for democrats.

Now, to have him lie outright about Obama's record on several networks? That is a different story.

20. yeah but I think there was still hope to use him if he was going to
be seat #60. It doesn't look like that will be the case and it doesn't matter if we get 56 or 57 seats, Lieberman is basically worthless in either scenario. We should have only considered keeping him around to get to 60.

40. Hopefully Seat 60 Won't Mean Much After Nov. 5th
To become Majority Leader, Reid made a deal with Joementum that set the 60 vote threshold on virtually every vote. Reid stuck with the deal or he'd lose both the Majority (like how the GOOP lost it when Jeffords became an Independent and began to caucus with the Democrats in 2001) and control of the agenda. If Democrats get a clear majority...52...then Reid can set up whatever organizational rules he wants for the next session and Joementum can go suck eggs.

My hope is that at 8am on November 5th, Joe's phone rings and he's told he's no longer got his committees and enjoy the bench by the backdoor.

He is a self serving opportunist that has a history of frequently and regularly abuses his fellow Democrats in the media and for decades has coddled and enabled the right wing of the republican party.

27. No, if Lieberman permits it, the Republicans can milk their "token Jew" for years.
He'll never gain any actual power or sway in their party,
of course.

15. Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have never been so embarrassed as when he took the stage at the Repub. convention.
The fact that the people of the Dem. party supported and campaigned for him (alright, it was for Gore, but he WAS our VP nominee?!) and then he got up and turncoated like that. Just shameful.
Good riddance.
Just an added bonus for McCain not to be Pres, as I don't want Traitorman to be Sec. of State. Like a Dem. controlled Congress would let that happen! Hah!

29. Holy Joe must be gambling on a McCain win...
...hoping to get a cabinet seat. I mean LIEberman has to know that the Democrats this fall are very likely to increase the number of seats they hold in the Senate, thereby making him expendable. I can only hope that come January he will be forced to caucus with the minority Republicans, in which case he would lose his committee assignments, etc.
