Hey America, V (for Vendetta) was talking about YOU!:
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 12:39 PM by marmar
"Good evening, (replace London with the US city of your choice). Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of every day routine- the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, thereby those important events of the past usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, a celebration of a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat.

There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there?

Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror."

7. It's even worse in the UK now
Some councils are actually paying informants to report on "illegal" activities in their neighborhoods.

Now imagine for a moment the neighbor you've never gotten along with becomes a paid informant.

23. Beat them to the punch....Start informing on your Republican neighbors TODAY!
Use a "safe" computer, or anonymous Snail Mail.
Be creative....make up some good stuff.
It will probably never be checked out, but it ALL goes into the database.

Let the right wing whackjobs start wondering why they get refused a seat on an airplane, or get a visit from Homeland Security Stormtroopers in the middle of the night.

The only way to counter a government Total Information Database is to fill it with bogus data.

Garbage IN, Garbage OUT (GIGO).

30-year Anniversary: Tonkin Gulf Lie Launched Vietnam War

Media Beat (7/27/94)

By Jeff Cohen and Norman Solomon

SNIP

In the absence of independent journalism, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution — the closest thing there ever was to a declaration of war against North Vietnam — sailed through Congress on Aug. 7. (Two courageous senators, Wayne Morse of Oregon and Ernest Gruening of Alaska, provided the only "no" votes.) The resolution authorized the president "to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression."

The rest is tragic history.

Nearly three decades later, during the Gulf War, columnist Sydney Schanberg warned journalists not to forget "our unquestioning chorus of agreeability when Lyndon Johnson bamboozled us with his fabrication of the Gulf of Tonkin incident."

Schanberg blamed not only the press but also "the apparent amnesia of the wider American public."

And he added: "We Americans are the ultimate innocents. We are forever desperate to believe that this time the government is telling us the truth."

14. if that was true, he shoulda said "dude" instead of "bloke"
I believe it should be "whereby" instead of "thereby" as well

the closing line is good too. "So if you have seen nothing. If the crimes of this nation remain unnoticed to you then I suggest you go on with your daily lives as if nothing has happened. But if you see what I see, and if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I invite you to join me, one year from today outside the gates of parliament, and together we shall give them a 5th of November which shall never, ever be forgot."

You probably should have included a link to a youtube video though, because you know Americans don't like to read.

21. Alan Moore, its author, hated the movie and would disagree.
He hated it so much, in fact, that he terminated his contract with DC over it. To quote him:

"The movie has been "turned into a Bush-era parable by people too timid to set a political satire in their own country… It's a thwarted and frustrated and largely impotent American liberal fantasy of someone with American liberal values standing up against a state run by neoconservatives—which is not what the comic V for Vendetta was about. It was about fascism, it was about anarchy, it was about England."

It was largely dumped from the movie, but the V in the original writings was promoting anarchy and a total destruction of government, not liberalism or socialism. He wasn't interested in improving the world, he just wanted to destroy the system that existed. He didn't care about what replaced it. The liberal elements in the movie were an invention of the Wachowski brothers, and enraged the original author (who vocally requested that people boycott it).

25. I think "V" works in the same way the original Planet of the Apes movie bettered the novel.
Of course Rod Serling wrote that script!
