bush hangin' with Streisand, Freeman, and The Who
This should be a sight to behold:

Broadway veterans Morgan Freeman, Barbra Streisand, and Twyla Tharp are among the recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors of 2008. The other recipients to be honored at the 31st annual national celebration of the arts, are singer George Jones and The Who band members, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey.

The awards will be bestowed on December 6 at a State Department dinner, hosted by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and a star-studded ceremony will follow on December 7, featuring a large number of guest performers from New York, Hollywood, Nashville, and the arts capitals of the world, to be taped for future broadcast. The honorees will be seated with President and Mrs. Bush.

3. I wouldn't show up.
I think the excuse that their schedule is full until after January 2009 is a good one. It certainly gets the point across.

4. The Arts transcend politics
and the honorees are chosen by the Kennedy Center Board of Directors and past winners, not by the sitting President. I think they'dd be silly to try and make a poiltical statement out of this.

7. agreed
In the past few years, the honorees have included Redford, Spielberg, and Scorsese, all of whom have been outspoken supporters of Democrats in the past. Leon FLeisher, who was honored last year, wrote a piece about he handled it.

5. I have never understood the willingness of some "stars" to associate with shits like the Shrub and
Mrs. Vehicular Homicide.

Now, for someone on their way up, it would possibly damage their career to appear too political and I cannot fault someone in that position for their choice.

But top-notch veterans like Babs and The Who - what do they need to be anywhere near that filth for? They would not even be risking anything to simply say, "Fuck off" to Lil' Georgie. I would think that their "stardom" would empower them to be able to do what they wanted.

Is the answer that many (most?) people just do not really care about politics and the ramifications of policy?
