Gosinski, DEA, McCain Addiction Story Makes it To Another News Source

McCain's addiction also embroiled her with one of her charity's former employees, Tom Gosinski, who reported her drug use to the DEA and provided prosecutors with a contemporaneous journal that detailed the effects of her drug problems. He was later accused by a lawyer for McCain of trying to extort money from the McCain family.

"It's not just about her addiction, it's what she did to cover up her addiction and the lives of other people that she ruined, or put at jeopardy at least," Gosinski said in an interview this week.

Cindy and John McCain declined repeated requests to be interviewed for this article. The McCain campaign also declined to comment.

2. Gee, now that it's "out there"
Aren't the bulldogs of the media supposed to be on this? I mean, now that the rumor has been made flesh, they're supposed to get all up on it, aren't they? Or is it once again okay if you're a Republican? Is there any limit to that? You can proposition pages, plead guilty to cruising men's rooms, offer a blow job to a cop, pay a hooker to dress you up in a diaper, or ruin the savings and loan industry, and it's all okay as long as you caucus on the right side of the aisle.

The dead of and derivative from 9/11 thank you, O Wise Men of Washington.

8. No, it's not huge
But when something hits Drudge, no matter how scurrilous, irrelevant or long ago, it must then be reported because it's "out there." Of course, this apparently doesn't hold for Republicans.

11. None of it's really new, though.
This is old, old news with a few new tidbits here and there. Mostly it's stuff that's been gone over again and again.

12. Has it indeed been gone over again and again?
I'm willing to bet that a poll of McCain supporters would reveal nearly complete ignorance of Cindy McCain's past.

5. *tongue firmly in cheek*
Well, my goodness, we can't go around asking Cindy McCain why she didn't Just Say No & why she stole from her charity in order to support her habit! That would make her a common drug addict! No, see she is in the Limbaugh camp. It's "only" pills & should receive only sympathy.

We certainly can't ask McCain why he didn't notice he was married to an addict for years.

Had Palin done this, it would clearly be sexist to ask questions about it.

Had Michelle Obama done all this, it would be a different story. After all, she'd be just a common druggie with an absentee husband.

Not so tongue in cheek, may I just say that my f-ing head is going to explode into a million pieces if McCain/Palin win? I have done the ubiquitous "moving to Canada" threat before but at age 42 I can honestly say if Obama doesn't win, I am afraid of going into a deep depression. My current threat is that if he doesn't win, I'm going into a closet with a bong for four years.

9. It's too long, takes too long to get to DEA stuff and reads like a rerun of the addiction story
All we can hope is someone else picks up the lead and does a better job of research and reporting on the abuse of power part.

Cindy McCain also discussed her addiction to painkillers. In the late 1980s, she underwent back surgeries and became addicted to painkillers that she was stealing from a medical charity she had founded.

"The era I was raising my children was the era when you had to be Super Mom," she said. "I was putting too much pressure on myself."

Cindy McCain has said she quit cold turkey in 1992 after her parents confronted her. She told the magazine she hid her dependency from her husband "because I didn't want to let him down."
