He's lived with the "Mavrick" McCain myth for over 20 years and it's kinda like finding out that your favorite rock star can't really play an instrument, but you have this built-in illusion that he really can. The big disconnect with Tweety and many other of the beltway bubble is they think all this is being done despite Gramps, not with his knowledge or approval. Maybe he's right.
