How the GOP will view Charlie Gibson's interview. |
|
I just watched Charlie Gibson's interview of the GOP's pick to be VP on ABC's Nightline.
Apparently, ABC pre-taped this thing and will be dragging it out over a few nights (thank FSM that Dr. Colbert is on vacation otherwise I couldn't see it). It is edited and so far it has taken place both in some kind of hunting lodge and outside next to the pipeline.
The initial reaction by the greater internets population (as seen by the brave DUers who ventured into Freeperland) was a mix of shock and anger. I knew this before watching, but that is not how I see the GOP's eventual spin on it.
For me, however, the most memorable thing about the interview was her volume, which is what I think the GOP will desperately latch onto. Two other major oddities stuck out for me and the first one was her use of a verbal crutch: she repeated his name over and over like as if she was selling him a timeshare. The other was her cadence; she sounded more like someone who had memorized her lines, not someone who was answering questions. It also made her sound like she was trying harder to convince herself about what she was trying to provide an answer to his questions.
If my assessment is correct, the GOP will use her "eager-to-answer-as-quickly-and-loudly-as-possible" replies as an excuse to describe her demeanor instead of the content of her answers. They will say she's resolute and repeat the old tired lies about her being "strong" and whatever.
One reason the GOP insisted it be edited (you know they did) was to put her worst answers out first and then leak the "better" performances in later "episodes". That way they get out all the bad crap on the first day and by the third (she gets three days, right?) all the pundits who said she did poorly can "be impressed" by how much better she got! Thus creating what TV people call a "story arc" and allow the viewers at hope to follow along with their favorite pundit and come to love her just like they did.
Another reason may have been to consider feedback from webtubes such as Freeperland and DU.
Anyway, that's my take.

4. True. They'll say, "she sat up straight and looked ahead." |
|
I'm surprised she didn't have a book on her head to show off her posture.

2. Did she know the questions beforehand? |
|
I am thinking not because somebody in the McCain camp would've prepped her on the Bush Doctrine. I hope Charlie had more questions like that one.

3. If she didn't her handlers did. |
|
It sounded as though Gibson asked follow-up question.

5. I believe the questions were "agreed" upon |
|
although there were follow-up questions.
regarding the bush doctrine - I find it difficult to believe she wasn't prepped on this, there are 2 possibilities - either her tutors didn't call the bush doctrine the bush doctrine and referred to it as something else, or she forgot
as far as the interview goes for me - I couldn't watch it, tried to watch some of the video clips, but her voice just zings through me like fingernails on a chalkboard. Although body language and voice inflections are just as telling as the words, I just can't stand listening to her, so I'll read the transcript and leave it to others to interpret body language and voice inflections

6. I thought I was the only one. |
|
I know it's shallow of me, but I hate her voice and can't stand to watch her speak. Glad to know I'm not the only one with that reaction.

7. Her "not knowing" about the so-called "Bush Doctrine" is a way for the GOP to say ... |
|
... she's not a part of the "Washington Crowd" or she's an outsider and will "reform" Washington.
Most of all she can say she's not a part of the old Bush ways.
Remember, the GOP tried to tell everyone there's a new GOP Party in town!

9. The whole interview is posted at Political Videos. It's in 3 parts. I've only watched the 2nd which |
|
covers the Bridge To No Where, and how she in a round about way admitted she was for it before she was "against" it. Charlie Gibson asked her if she kept the money and she said yes!
