If *only* there was something... a sign or something

Closed beach signs are widely ignored by tourists and residents alike as they play in the rising surf along the recently cleaned beach in Biloxi, Miss., Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008. Although Mississippi Gulf Coast residents are not expected to see the same weather conditions as Hurricane Gustav, authorities warn some cottage owners living in low areas to seek shelter as some flooding is expected from Ike.

1. Someone once asked "How do we get rid of all the stupid people?"
"Remove the warning labels and let nature take it's course."

2. Are you near a tv? m$nbc just showed some dingbats who
drove onto the beach in Galveston, and are now being airlifted out by the Coast Guard. So they lose a truck and risk others' lives, just for the fun of it.:eyes:

11. same here, babylonsister.
been here 19 years. there is no franchise or copyright on stupid, it is an equal opportunity trait. I have seen stupid many other places

It is the thrill seeker, who want to see that big wave before headin out of town.

Same kind of people who drive around to look at high water in the rainy season, or want to see a tornado just once but not where it will hurt anybody..from a distance across an open plain.

5. The only reason you know these people are there..
Is because *other* people are there taking pictures of them.

Why does one set of people get a pass for stupid behavior while the other set does not?

12. The authorities should pass out toe tags to people like this.
Then, tell them to jot down their ID info and a next-of-kin reference and calmly ask them to attach the tag somewhere upon their person. And then thank them for making their job a bit easier.

I guess people are free to be absolute morans, but don't put emergency personnel in danger because of your stupidity.

Yeesh.

31. They were basically doing that for Ike in Galveston

Crews went door-to-door after the mandatory evacuation was ordered. If you didn't leave, they provided an indelible ink pen to write their social security number on their arm so that "they could identify the body".

Remarkably, a number of people changed their minds about staying when they heard that...

22. Tourists and idiots drowning
I visited my daughter in Panama City Beach this summer. We didn't hit the beaches at all because of the red or double red flags everyday. 2 tourists drowned while we were there, walked right past the flags, ignored people yelling at them not to go in. The cops and rescue people couldn't go in from shore because it was too rough. By the time the rescue boat got out to them, they had drowned.

My daughter says it happens often down there. A lot of people are so arrogantly sure that THEY can't be taken down by a little undertow. THEY are the super strong swimmers that can handle it. And it's their vacation dammit.

24. That reminds me of a book out in the sixties or seventies called
"The Late And Great State of California". The book is a what would happen if the big one, the earthquake on the San Andreas fault, happens. One of the post earthquake scenarios is a massive tidal wave or tsunami that heads for the beaches of Southern California. Instead of running for high ground, among the survivors of the earthquake are California surfers who flock to the beaches to catch the "big wave".
