Lies, half-truths and contradictions: McCain lying about sex

The headline on this post sounds like shameless pandering, right? It pales next to how low the McCain campaign is sinking on an a TV ad it released this week called "Education."

The 30-second spot running in battleground states claims that Barack Obama's one accomplishment in terms of education policy was "Legislation to teach 'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners.

"Learning about sex before learning to read?" the the ad's narrator intones, "Barack Obama. Wrong on education. Wrong for your family."

And this ad is wrong in several different ways -- starting with taste. It's just shameless fear-mongering -- and using the sexualization of children to do it, from the imagery to the text. It's the lowest of the low.

Obama doesn't support explicit sex education for kindergarteners. The bill -- which never was passed out of the Illinois legislature --included teaching "age-appropriate sex education" -- you know, what is inappropriate touching, that sort of stuff. And parents could opt-out of the unit if they were uncomfortable with their kids hearing this material.

The ad also (mis)quotes Education Week (a trade publication) blogger David Hoff, who wrote "Education Week says Obama 'hasn't made a significant mark on education.'" That's technically an accurate quote. But the spot doesn't include Hoff quoting an Arizona school superintendent saying "I don't think (McCain) has a strong track record of putting education at the top of his priorities."
