4. OMG. 40% ?
On TV this afternoon I heard sheriff's deputies asking one man in Galveston to "take this Sharpie and write your name and SS# on your arm so we can tell your next of kin."

7. "Despite evacuation order, 1,000 remain in Galveston jail"
The reason for not evacuating the prisoners is a security issue and cannot be discussed, sheriff's spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said. "The prisoners and their safety and well-being are paramount and it will be handled," Tuttoilmondo said. Any decision to move the prisoners would be kept secret for security reasons, as happened before Hurricane Rita in 2005, he said. "We did this during Rita and no one knew until it was absolutely done," Tuttoilmondo said.

9. Somehow I just don't trust what I just read.
I certainly hope the prisoners are kept safe.

20. They think like my husband.....
I was trying to explain, to my husband, how bad this storm will be. I told him how authorities have said it means 'certain death' to stay in the path of the hurricane. He said he can understand how the authorities want to try and encourage people to leave but that is a little extreme! I tried, again, to explain how dire the situation will become and he pointed out that there are reporters there! I gave up and said we would talk about it when we see the sad results of people staying.

18. evacuation problems ala Katrina, too...
HOUSTON -- More than 40 elderly Hurricane Ike evacuees from a Baytown nursing home found themselves not evacuating, but rather stuck on the buses sent to take them to safety.

< snip >
However, the state did not have buses equipped to handle the transportation of the evacuees, many who are unable to walk on their own. As evacuation officials scrambled to find buses to take the nursing home residents to a shelter, the elderly evacuees waited aboard the buses that arrived at the center at 3 p.m.

At 10 p.m., they were still waiting to be taken to safety.
