I Can't Believe All the Gas Lines Tonight!!
We went out to eat tonight and every gas station we passed, that had gas under $4, had lines out into the street! We passed about five different gas stations that had huge lines. One went on for about twenty-five to thirty cars long!

It is a sad commentary on our economy when people line up for gas like this. People are really hurting. This is what this once great country has come to.

3. It's been going on since last night here in TN - out of gas and the price is $5+
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 08:31 PM by TornadoTN
Johnson City, Tennessee to be specific. Just within the past hour, one station hit $6.00. Most are approaching $5.00, some over that mark. Most are completely out of gasoline.

It really is a sad testament to our nation. We are watching Disaster Capitalism in full effect. I just hope people wise up to it and finally take action.

15. The price jump is increible since the storm has not hit.
And the rigs, in the coast, only provide 1 in 4 barrels of oil. There is no need for this. How will they tie this to Obama I wonder......

8. Asheville, NC is essentially out of gas.....
My neighbors tried to get gas, including calling around to local stations. He did finally after searching high and low get some at a Citgo.....and the owner was standing outside the store with a gun on his hip shouting at people to limit it to $30 or else! Holy shit.

I had no idea this type of thing was happening all over. I thought it was a fluke here in Greensboro. (the lines) I also had no idea stations were running out of gas. This is just crazy.

20. Happened here during Katrina....
but this sounds more widespread. That means, of course, that they have get massive amounts of gas to all of these locations.....and it means it's going to take some times. It was only a few days during Katrina.....this could be longer because it's more widespread.

24. Hey, I'm in North Knoxville!
I filled up last night on the way home at $3.69. When I came to work today at 4, it was $4.49. A couple of stations still were at $3.89, and they had lines out to the street. It'll be interesting to see what the price is -- and to count the bags on the pumps -- when I go home at midnight.

22. Around 2 pm, my Mom called and said, "fill everything up,...I'm in a line".
I went ahead and followed Mom's advice, filling up the tank and gas cans. No lines.

Merely three hours later, I went to the local mom/pop shop to return a movie. Incredibly, there were 18-20 cars in line. It was,...WEIRD. Folks out here don't normally panic, like that!!!

Maybe, there are "instincts" or "intuition" operating, here. I don't like it.

23. Just saw this thread a little before 11 PM. Decided to run out and fill up in Chapel Hill.
Streets deserted. Gas price up $.17--with a sign on the pump asking customers to please limit purchase to 10 gallons. I did--and my tank is now almost full.

27. Check your state's laws about price gouging - stop it now
At least 13 states — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia — have laws that specifically address price gouging in the event of a declared emergency. Other states may exercise authority under general deceptive trade practice laws depending on the nature of the state law and the specific circumstances under which price increases occur.

http://www.kipesquire.net/2005/09/which-states-have-pri ... /

NC and AL have put laws into effect. Call if someone is gouging. It may not help immediately, but it may stop it some.

Save your receipts. Inform the places where you get gas you are reporting them. Report it now so it won't keep skyrocketing.

It won't help the immediate supply but it should help with the price.

31. Speculation Run Amok....
I remember gas lines and rationing in 1974 and 1979...planning your day around when stations would be open and being prepared to sit in line. But this is to be expected in a country that has become financially skittish and shell-shocked. The oil companies are playing all their cards right now...they've become more important to this regime as one of the few financial hedges they have against all the other failures going on. While millions sucked up high prices, the investors just took the money from one pocket and put it in the other.

The sad benefit of this storm may be to force focus on energy...and the urgent need to get away from the "addiction" to oil and the great financial bite the oil companies have put on the American public. Maybe a good kick in the gas tank will knock a few more voters off the fence and onto the Obama bandwagon.

Cheers...

34. further proof that people are dumb, panicky animals
absolutely no reason for this...it has been happening all around atlanta. people are creating this shortage by panic buying and THAT is what is driving this...not actual shortages, but shortages driven by every idiot and his brother running to the station to fill up. i even saw some idiots filling 5 gallon gas cans in addition to filling his tank...

way to go people...good job of creating a panic!!!
