AG declines inquiry into Schweitzer's comments

By MATT GOURAS Associated Press Writer and DANIEL PERSON Chronicle Staff Writer

HELENA - The state attorney general declined Thursday to investigate comments made by Gov. Brian Schweitzer that suggest the governor engaged in election tampering, a decision that launched a flurry of partisan accusations.

Schweitzer has apologized for remarks he made during a July speech in Philadelphia. The governor said he was joking when he told stories about delaying the release of one county's election results and of tribal police running off Republican poll watchers on reservations.

On Thursday, Secretary of State Brad Johnson asked the attorney general to investigate Bozeman resident Tamara Hall's complaint over Schweitzer's comments. Hall is a local Republican activist and a Chronicle columnist.

Listen to his speech for yourself here (relevant portion starts at about 13:30).

ON EDIT: I should add that the lunatic in question, Tammy Hall, is a columnist for one of the major dailies, and despite being utterly unqualified to be anything, somehow never gets canned.
