What is the fundamental PURPOSE of a democracy-based government?
If we are either unable or unwilling to answer that question, we have no business proclaiming ourselves "free", let alone morally able to mandate others' lives.
WHAT IS THE FUNDAMENTAL PURPOSE OF A DEMOCRACY-BASED GOVERNMENT?
According to our forefathers, government was intended to PROTECT the people from ALL OPPRESSION allowing THE PEOPLE a role in governance over themselves.
However, government has changed.
What is the fundamental function of our government? This isn't about a "reality" that constitutes CRIMINAL ATTACK ON BASIC MORALS/IDEALS/LAWS/FUNCTION. Answer the question: WHAT IS THE FUNDAMENTAL FUNCTION OF OUR GOVERNMENT, keep in mind the fact it is supposed to function TOWARDS DEMOCRACY.
Seems like a dumb question,...but, there is something dumb or NUMB operating in this nation. So, I figure, the BASICS of purpose of OUR government might be helpful in a dumb and numb nation.

That was the Declaration of independence, not the Constitution. Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness means jack shit in today's America.

Try being "happy" or have "liberty" if you are homeless, and peacefully congregating with a few others under a bridge or bush somewhere. If you can't find happiness in your work, if you're lucky enough that your job wasn't outsourced, then you're pretty much SOL, at least under the economic system I've known.
Not at all certain what your point about the constitution versus DofI was, but the next few words reads, "That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed".
I wonder what the consent these days is among the governed, given the poor turnout for elections. Perhaps not so good?

I'm sure everyone is familiar with people like Grover Norquist. I just don't understand the point. How much money and power is enough. When they have more than they'll ever need or spend, Just where do they stop?
