I'm so sick of and tired of the shit way things are done in this country. There will definitely be deaths in this.

18. Yep! And here's what I just heard in the news.... |
|
.. that the reason so many were left behind is there was NO ROOM IN SHELTERS. So, while they did provide buses, they had NOWHERE to take them to. Doesn't surprise me.

I'm sick on this. Truly. But I can't understand how people put their lives on the line to something like this if they have ANY other options.
I live on a large body of water in the great lakes; we're prone to flooding in the perfect circumstance, which have not yet happened to me (thankfully). I've lived through microbursts and tornadoes. But a hurricane? I'd be in my car (with pets) as far as my little old self could take me, probably using back roads and going someplace no one else is thinking of instead of major population centers.
I just don't understand the "tough" persona some coastal people seem to try to affect, or why they find it necessary. Mother Nature is a cruel mistress. One might be better served understanding that, and subjugating their own ego to concentrate on survival.

5. How many were rescued during Katrina? |
|
There's a much larger area being affected by this than with Katrina, but much of that area is not in the mandatory evacuation zones. ALL of New Orleans, around 450,000 people, was under a mandatory evacuation order. They are estimating around 600,000 people comprise the mandatory evacuation zones for Ike. So they are estimating that approximately 40,000 people stayed behind in dangerous areas. For as many deaths as there were with Katrina, there had to have been thousands upon thousands more rescues.

10. Here are the Katrina numbers from the feds: |
|
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 12:33 AM by kurth_
- RESCUE
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 33,000 people, while the Federal Emergency Management Agency rescued more than 2,800
- EVACUATION
Evacuees in American Red Cross, non-American Red Cross, and state-run shelters located in 26 states totaled 140,711. This total did not include a significant number of people who self-evacuated inland from the Gulf Coast area; a total that was estimated at 200,000. Many of the self-evacuees stayed with friends and relatives and in hotels/motels.

and 5.5 million people live in the Houston area. A similar number of people have evacuated as during Katrina. Rita was a damn nightmare because it came right after Katrina. Everyone, I mean everyone, in the Houston area tried to evacuate. This time around it seems some people took the "boy cried wolf too many times" approach, but I am sure that around 1.5-2 million people got the hell out of dodge. And it's not just Houston. It's east Texas and western Louisiana.

11. Well of course, but that is not possible. It is too late. Once the winds |
|
exceeded 55mph, emergency response moved their vehicles to a safe location and took shelter themselves.

9. It's really to bad the RNC wasn't this week.. |
|
'cause every damn one of them would be saved then.
What plans were in place to help those in Galveston & Houston evacuate? Did they do the same things that New Orleans did 2 weeks ago - buses and shelters available more inland - or did they just tell everyone to fend for themselves?
If they had transportation available and places for people to go - and 37,000 of them heard all of the warnings but chose to stay - I do have to question that a bit??
