Gas price panic hits West Michigan

KALAMAZOO --

Panicked motorists Friday queued up at Kalamazoo-area gas stations fearing a rumored increase
to as much as $6 a gallon because of Hurricane Ike, prompting Gov. Granholm to call for calm.

Luckily, gas prices apparently never reached that level -- the closest was $5.09 a gallon at
Marathon in Mendon as of 7:15 p.m. Friday, and most gas was actually under $4 locally, according
to gasbuddy.com, a Web site that tracks gas prices.

But the nearly same-as-usual prices didn't stop droves of drivers from descending on the pumps
anyway and, in at least one case, resulting in a collision.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said Friday there's "no reason to panic" over gasoline prices and
supply in the wake of the hurricane pounding the Texas coast.

Further, she warned gas-station owners against price-gouging.

'Do not panic'

"Our main message is this: Please do not panic," Granholm said in a statement.

"There should not be a rush to gas stations.

There is an ample supply now to meet the current demand.".

3. Hmmm...just went to get gas in a Dallas suburb
Racetrac has all but 3 pumps covered up. I was able to fill up, though.

But both the 7-11's near my house look like it's business as usual. Prices at all three places is around $3.50/gal still.

The store was all but out of flashlights and had **no** D batteries for what flashlights they had left...had to get those at 7-11. Lots and lots of bottled water still there.

Got a bunch of stuff I can keep in a cooler, a few tarps, and some nonperishables to stock up on that I will need at some point in the future anyway.
The store was pretty damn crowded considering it was after midnight.

6. I heard this rumor at work today
Where did it begin? People I work with were saying there were what looked to be runs on the gas stations in the SW MI area. In my town.

Who started this rumor? I want to know.

9. It's a self-fullfilling panic. A few people freaking out thinking "OH SHIT, NO GAS TOMORROW",
they make a beeline to the station, other people notice and the wonderful M$M reports a "run" on service stations and before you can say "morans are at it again" there are lines around the block to buy petrol for $5+ a goddamn gallon. It's how we brilliant Americans operate.
