Galveston has fires going on and there is no way to put them out.
"Brennen's" Restaurant reported to be out of control. A couple of apartment fires.

No link specifically, but if you Google there are stories.

Also, check the local steaming, one of the best:

6. Here's some text from your link:
"One of Houston's historic restaurants burned to the ground early Saturday morning. Firefighters were powerless to save Brennan's of Houston as high winds from Hurricane Ike prevented crews from dousing the flames.

The fire was reported at 12:20 a.m., by the time fire trucks arrived, though, the restaurant was fully engulfed. Almost immediately, fire crews went into a defensive posture to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. "

This is not good.

19. Injuries critical
A father, his young daughter and a third man were injured in a two-alarm fire at Brennan's restaurant, a Midtown institution, famous for its turtle soup and Bananas Foster.

Fire officials said the blaze could pose a significant risk to adjacent buildings.

The 45-year-old man and his 4-year-old daughter were taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center with burn injuries, Assistant Fire Chief Omero Longoria said.

Both were listed in critical condition early today, a hospital spokesperson said.

A third burn victim was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition. The man is not related to the father and daughter, a hospital spokeswoman said.

9. Another update...
"A fire broke out at a Galveston yacht basin, where boats are stored and fixed, said Galveston Fire Chief Michael Varela Sr., and firefighters were unable to reach it because the area was flooded with about 8 feet of water.

If the fire spreads, Varela said, firefighters may be able to contain portions of it. But he said he was more concerned that new fires might break out elsewhere in the city, where many spots are impassable."

10. 12 house fires in Galveston.
"At least 12 house fires burned on Galveston Island, where chest-high floodwaters prevented fire crews from reaching the blazes, a Reuters eyewitness on the island said."

This is horrible.

What ever happened to the DUer who was going to tough it out on Galveston? Anybody heard from him?

11. Sailboats at Galveston Yacht Basin on fire
From staff reports
The Daily News

Published September 12, 2008
GALVESTON — The Galveston Yacht Basin is fully engulfed in flames. Several of the 125 sailboats housed at the end of Holiday Drive are on fire, Capt. Henry Porretto of the Galveston Police Department said.

The fire department sent two companies to respond to the blaze, but the water is too deep for them to get any closer than one block away, fire Chief Mike Varela said.

13. Fires are definitely not good during a hurricane
Cause the fire department usually can't respond until the wind speeds die down to under hurricane strength.

15. Stranded Galveston residents call in vain for help
"

"Cars were submerged. They were wading in it, feeling trapped. They called and wanted help to get out of there," said Holzaepfel.

By early afternoon, the police chief in the small Brazoria County town of Surfside Beach said the entire island was covered by rushing water, chest-deep in some places.

...

Power was out all across Galveston Island, much of which already had flooded. Two house fires are burning, as did a boat warehouse that was widely photographed earlier Friday.

Power lines are down, he said, and it may be weeks before it can be restored. Assessment teams will get out this morning after the storm. Fifty people were rescued from high water and about 260 are in a shelter at Ball High School.

LeBlanc said he didn't know how long it would take before evacuated residents could return. The city may briefly allow them back in to check on their homes, but will then ask them to leave again until the city is safe.

"We feel the city of Galveston will have suffered from this storm," she said.

As of 2 a.m., power outages were widespread, heavily concentrated from the northwestern corner of Beltway 8 stretching southward to Galveston and east to Baytown, the edge of CenterPoint Energy's service area, spokesman Floyd LeBlanc said.

About 1.3 million of CenterPoint's approximately 2 million customers were in the dark. Counting additional outages north and east of the area in Entergy Texas' region, the number was approaching or exceeding 1.5 million.

Based on past experience, it could be a week or more before some customers get power back."
