(John Moroney, NECN: Brockton, MA) -

From search and rescue teams to the Red Cross, New England based volunteers are ready to head to the Gulf Coast. In the meantime flights in and out of Houston have been cancelled, with the last one landing in Boston.

As Hurricane Ike makes it way toward land, Captain James Eager of the Salvation Army is preparing to make his way from Massachusetts to Texas to help out after the storm comes ashore.

Eager: "It looks like it's going to be pretty bad and there's no doubt the need is going to be there for the salvation army and other volunteers and folks to come in and just do what we can."

Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated ... with unprecedented warnings of "certain death" for those who choose to remain in Galveston.

Ike is expected to deliver a devastating blow ... as a result the Red Cross has already dispatched resources and teams to the Gulf Coast ... hoping to avoid a repeat of Hurricane Katrina.

At Logan International Airport ... a flight from Texas arrived early Friday afternoon. These passengers are the lucky ones. they were able to reach Boston before the airport in Houston was shut down because of Ike.

They'll spend the weekend ... watching and worrying about those they left behind.
