This Youtube video shows The Door To Hell, as the locals in Darvaz,Turkmenistan call it. Thirty-five years ago, geologists were drilling when then encountered a very large cavern filled with poisonous gas. They ignited the gas expecting it to burn off in a few hours. It still burns today.

1. Don't send McCain to that!
It still has a perfectly legitimate value as a resting location for Jack Chick tracts! :silly:

3. The doorway to Hell may be in Darvaz, Turkmenistan, but Hell itself has been burning under
Centralia, Pennsylvania since 1962--forty-six years!!!

Why pay for transportation to Turkmenistan when Pennsylvania is sooo much closer, albeit with smaller, but many more openings.

4. what kind of gas is that...?
why wasn't it capped and tapped to provide energy for darvaz or elsewhere...?

seems like a lot of energy wasted over 35 years, now that we're looking for new sources.

6. it's already been burning for 35 years...
i wasn't talking about pumping it into people's homes, but rather to make electricity by burning it to power generators at a power plant. although it would be a little late now, i meant if it had been used that way from the get-go.
as far as it being "poisonous"- that can be an ambiguous term. propane and methane aren't poisonous, but they could kill you if you were breathing them. there's the question of 'how poisonous'? and whether or not it could still be safely harnessed and burned at a power plant, or if the fumes resulting from it's burning would be poisonous. part of why i was wondering what gas it actually was.

my point being that it's obviously flammable, and was apparently a much larger volume than anticipated- so i was speculating on whether or not it would have been feasible for it to have been used as an energy source, had they so desired.
