John McCain's Shocking Admission on his lack of love for his country

This great letter appeared in the Boston Globe this week:

AT THE Republican convention, John McCain actually said: "I fell in love with my country when I
was a prisoner in someone else's."

Michelle Obama must be saying: "Did you hear that?"

3. The Dems tend to be too decent to jump into that gutter.
It's the sort of comment the GOP would leap on if Obama or Biden said something like this. The Dems tend to be too decent to jump into that gutter. Maybe they should

11. The truth isn't a gutter
What the Repubs do with the truth is. The Dems need to attack McPalin with their own words -- at every opportunity, IMO. Keep them so busy trying to defend themselves they can't catch their breaths.

That's what the Repubs do with their lies, and it works. Should work even better with the truth.

2. So he didn't love his country before he was a POW?
On the 1 hand, I really hate the jingoistic "love your country" stuff. On the other, that is a good catch. Hypocrite.

5. I've never loved my country.
I love my planet. I love what's left of the incredible western region of my country: the mountains, the valleys, the rocks, trees, meadows, lakes, rivers, and the diverse life they have, and can, sustain.

I don't love politics. I don't love political boundaries. I don't love political parties or politicians. I don't love government. Those are all ways to control people, and like people, are all open to, and rife with, corruption.

What, exactly, is the point of "loving your country," if not to condition you to cheer it on like a sports team, "beating" the rest of the world?

How is convincing yourself that you and your country are somehow superior to the rest of the world, better, more special, etc., anything but pandering to the lowest human denominator? Giving that lowest human tendency towards bigotry another target?

Just a different perspective on "loving your country."

6. You have a point
I always thought when politicians say 'God bless America' it's being a little selfish. What about the rest of the world. Do you not want God's blessing on all of us, not just Americans?

7. If the intent behind those kinds of statements was sincere,
they WOULD want blessings on all, wouldn't they?

9. oh i agree with you
Imagine.

but the republicans play the people with that shit, and the people eat it up. and i have to admit, it was relatively recently that i gained a more mature perspective.

14. THAT'S what we need.
A citizenry with a more mature perspective.

We could leave all the nonsense attached to politics in the U.S. behind and get something accomplished.

10. Oh, they so need to use that in an ad
And bodyslam the Republicans for their fucking hypocrisy. Which is worse--for a candidate's wife to say it or for the candidate himself to say it? Sheesh.
