Pics post-Ike (pic heavy) of Galveston
http://www.chron.com/news/photogallery/Galveston_suffers_direct_hit_from_Hurricane_Ike.html#_self

A man tries to rescue a car that was swept away by floodwater caused by Hurricane Ike while trying to evacuate.

With the Flagship Hotel in the background, Hurricane Ike left the remnants of Murdock's Pier and Hooters along Seawall Boulevard.

Money safe being removed from what was Hooter's restaurant

1. Well...if something had to get damaged, Hooters is a good choice.
The people of Houston and Galveston are in my thoughts.
I've done the hurricane thing. NOT fun.

2. Nothing is a good choice.
The people employed by Hooters need to feed themselves and their families just like anyone else.
I suppose if the strip club I worked at was decimated you would think that was a good choice too.

My heart goes out to all those affected so strongly by this. Time to raid the stuff-I-don't-use-anymore pile.

13. Hoosters requires pantyhose. In 2008. Pantyhose
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 10:28 PM by Patiod
That in itself is enough reason for the chain to go down.

Pantyhose.

In 2008.

I'm surprised they don't mandate hair mousse

27. This is GD.
Humor is better served up in the Lounge or the Humor Group. I'm not busting your chops so much as letting you know that GD is for serious discussion.

comment. I forgot the solemnity pledge we take before entering the hallowed hall of GD

Thank you for pointing this out, rather than just ignoring my horrible transgression.

26. Well said.
I agree with you. Just because it was a business does not mean people are not affected by this. My heart goes out to the people affected by these storms too. I've been through a few hurricanes myself. It's not so easy as some people seem to think it is to financially survive these storms whether someone evacuates or not. It's expensive and painful either way to deal with them.

32. Are women forced to work there?
Does someone put a gun to their heads & say "Work at Hooters or die?"

:eyes:

I don't care for their marketing, so I choose not to patronize the business. That's a far cry from saying "Hooray, the business is gone" while lots of employees are now without jobs in this crappy economy.

And they're located in 'respectable' malls, etc. like Baltimore's Inner Harbor. You want that shit, go up two blocks to "The Block" where you expect to see crap like that.

Would you eat at a restaurant called "Pikaninnies"?

4. DUer JefferyWilliamson was going to stay in Galveston - I'm glad he left
If I remember JW's address correctly, his house is not far from where this picture was taken:

John Ned Rose, 66, assesses the damage in font of his home near the corner of 53rd and M on Galveston Island.

5. ty for posting the pics.
We got light wind in SW Al. but I still could not sleep well, dreams full of past hurricanes and concerns about the folks in Ike's path.
People do not talk about it much, but I can vouch for PSTD months after being in a hurricane. The roar of the wind blowing for 18 hours or so really stays with a person.
Months later a strong breeze in the trees will set off anxiety. It took a long time before I could sleep thru a thunderstorm again.
Anyone going thru a hurricane will tell you it is the aftermath that is so hard to endure.

16. The Houston Chronicle also has a good blog
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 10:37 PM by rainbow4321
On Galveston, including video snippits. Sad stories are starting to come out:

http://blogs.chron.com/hurricanes/galveston/

Galveston records its first storm-related death
The first known storm related death in Galveston happened when a woman with a bad heart died when a generator powering her oxygen equipment failed.

Martha Ferguson, 65, died between noon and 1 p.m. Saturday at a house in Galveston where she was staying with relatives, according to her cousin Richard Dare.

<snip>

Galveston legends fall in Ike
Only plywood, rubble, metal and the famed red door of the Balinese Room are left after Ike laid waste to several seawall establishments, including the historical nightclub dating to the 1940s which was a part of Galveston's social fabric.

All the piers along the seawall are gone as the Gulf claimed the Hooter's, which was said to have descended into the water en masse with a loud explosion at 1 a.m., and Murdoch's Pier.

The Flagship Hotel Over the Water remains, but huge chunks of the building are missing.

20. Couple of personal photos ...
I ended up in some sort of protected-by-god-knows-what zone at my apartment complex. People a mile from me don't have power, and here I sit with power and Internet ... and taking stock of my many blessings this evening.

I went out earlier and walked around the neighborhood and took a few pics. Of course the Chronicles has better ones, but I thought I'd share a couple.

Before:

After:

This little one was seriously lost:

The loud riiiiip ... creeaaaakkk ... WHAM! sound I heard just outside my gate about 5am.

Lost garage door opener. Ike says "No problem ..."
