BREAKING: Three bodies pulled from Hurricane Ike wreckage in Galveston
Per CNN.com. I wonder how many more they'll find. :-(

1. Many more, unfortunately. That is my guess. I heard 30-40% of
the 60,000 residents stayed on Galveston Island.

2. Why on earth do people not leave
There was transportation provided.Pets were allowed. The news was saying if you stay you will face certain death.
I saw one woman interviewed saying she was staying because she didn't want to drive in the traffic.

I have lived on the west end of Galveston and also in Freeport. I know the area and I can't imagine anyone thinking they would be safe on Galveston during a hurricane.

I just do not understand.

7. Tall buildings..expensive apartments/condos
they probably thought they would be safe or myabe some feared that they "needed" to stay..to protect their stuff..

People often think they can ride these things out...

9. Some people do value property over or equal to life. Everyone decides that for themselves.

12. Well yeah there a people like that
We lived in The SD Black hills and had a idiot neighbor who refused to leave when a forest fire was a mile away. He planned on staying and fighting it. I am not sure with what as the power poles had burned up so no power for the well pump. Man was 67 years old. The wind did change and blew it back on itself but it came to within a half mile of our place. I know he could not have got out if needed.

8. I live on the west end of Galveston too and I can not imagine staying there.
But lots of people went through the evacuation of Rita and didn't want to experience that again. I didn't experience that so I can't condemn them for that reason.

11. Because they have no point of reference. They don't understand the reality of the situation.

Our existence has been 'Disney-fied'. All the sharp corners have been rounded off. It's sanitized and limited for your protection, and if you DO get hurt, there are lawyers hounding you to let them sue someone for you. People think they are 'protected', that there is no real danger in the world. I see that attitude here a lot, especially with the gun-grabbers. The fact is that the world is a dangerous place and death comes easy if you're careless. Mother Nature doesn't discriminate. Get out of the way or you WILL be killed.

Plus, it doesn't help that EVERY storm is 'the storm of the century' and EVERY hurricane season is 'gonna be a bad one this year'. If you over hype it every time, people stop taking it seriously. See:'The boy who cried wolf'.

14. Many could not move by themselves and received no help
Never forget the number of old or incapacitated people in these situations.

15. I'm pretty sure that people living in Million dollar - plus beachfront homes
have every thing they need to get out of Dodge.

17. Apparently though there were problems in the transportation arrangements.
Calls went unanswered. I am not sure how far in advance that was. But it looks right now like a screw-up of Katrina-like proportions. And I think there is blame at all levels.

18. I live on a barrier island in Fla. I would not wait for anyone to tell us to evacuate. (photos)
Even if the storm was a Cat 1 we'd be outta here. No property is worth your life or your families lives. No question it would be difficult. Staying in a motel, or with family or friends, not knowing what happened to your home, not knowing when you can go back. No question that is stressful and disruptive to your life. But so is drowning. Even if you don't drown, you put other people's lives at risk when you have to be rescued. Here's the little strip of land these people stayed on to ride out a cat 2/3 hurricane with storm surge predicted to be as high as 20 feet. I pray there is not a huge loss of life.

heres a quote from another gloater.

"At this point, 12 hours after it came ashore...many people did not die..
Yes, they lost property, homes, etc. 12 hours...3 deaths..

Train wreck , 18 deaths. 100 injured. Which had more coverage? Why?"
