How smart is your state?
Check it.

http://www.morganquitno.com/edrank.htm

Here's their top ten:

1) Vermont
2) Massachusetts
3) Connecticut
4) New Jersey (?!?)
5) Maine
6) Virginia
7) Montana
8) Wisconsin
9) Iowa
10)Pennsylvania

Except for Virgina, all of the states are either blue or swing states. Actually, I don't know about Montana, they've got a Dem gov at least.

10. Only reason VA is on the list...
...is because of Northern Virginia (NoVA) and D.C. The influx of educated people to DC, the neighboring Northern Virginia area, and the VA universities are what keep this red state educated. Take DC away and I doubt VA would be on the list.

Anyhow, GO VIRGINIA! I pray that this red state goes blue...

and yes teen driving and drinking is a problem here. As I said it's gotten better, but during the time my son was in High School, there were 12 deaths (tiny high school) in his 4 years there. (my kid is 22)

20. Did anyone read the factors on which the study was based?
http://www.morganquitno.com/edfact06.htm#FACTORS

POSITIVE (+ 1-13) AND NEGATIVE (- 14-21) FACTORS CONSIDERED:

1. Public Elementary and Secondary School Revenue per $1,000 Personal Income (Table 56) +
2. Percent of Public Elementary and Secondary School Current Expenditures used for Instruction (Table 134) +
3. Percent of Population Graduated from High School (Table 171) +
4. Averaged Freshman Graduation Rate for Public High Schools (Table 174) +
5. Percent of Public School Fourth Graders Proficient or Better in Reading (Table 203) +
6. Percent of Public School Eighth Graders Proficient or Better in Reading (Table 211) +
7. Percent of Public School Fourth Graders Proficient or Better in Writing (Table 219) +
8. Percent of Public School Eighth Graders Proficient or Better in Writing (Table 227) +
9. Percent of Public School Fourth Graders Proficient or Better in Mathematics (Table 235) +
10. Percent of Public School Eighth Graders Proficient or Better in Mathematics (Table 243) +
11. Average Teacher Salary as a Percent of Average Annual Pay of All Workers (Table 364) +
12. Average Daily Attendance as a Percent of Fall Enrollment in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools (Table 398) +
13. Percent of School-Age Population in Public Schools (Table 389) +

14. High School Drop Out Rate (Table 191) -
15. Special Education Pupil-Teacher Ratio (Table 339) -
16. Percent of Public Elementary and Secondary School Staff Who are School District Administrators (Table 380) -
17. Average Class Size in Public Elementary Schools (Table 425) -
18. Average Class Size in Public Secondary Schools (Table 426) -
19. Median Pupil-Teacher Ratio in Public Primary Schools (Table 429) -
20. Median Pupil-Teacher Ratio in Public Middle Schools (Table 432) -
21. Median Pupil-Teacher Ratio in Public High Schools (Table 435) -

The criteria in 14-21 seem okay, but some of the ones in 1-13 are strange.

Average teacher salary?

Also I'd like to know if they use NCLB standards for their tests.

Something's fishy with this ...

28. Yeah, I don't know how seriously you can take this.
Even if this is an accurate way of quantifying educational opportunities (it's really not about adult smartness), no one really thinks practically in terms of an entire state. People think far more about regions within that state, which can vary tremendously.

Take it with a grain of salt.

That has a similarity with McLame's rank in his Annapolis graduating class.

Is that why he chose doofus for his running mate?
