Empty Seats Greet McCain at Fla. Rally
By Robert Barnes
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Republican presidential nominee John McCain held his first rally without running mate Sarah Palin today, and let's just say there were seats available.

The McCain "Road to Victory" rally was originally scheduled to be a pancake breakfast, but the campaign said there was such an outpouring of enthusiasm the event was shifted to the 15,000-seat Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

The may not have been the best idea: There were almost no supporters in any of the cavernous arena's 24 upper-level seating sections, and only eight of the 21 sections downstairs held fans. Only four of those were filled, though some supporters crowded around the stage on the arena floor.

McCain and wife Cindy made a point of thanking supporters for coming out on "a Monday morning'' for the 9 a.m. rally.

I can just find one AP shot that shows only the crowd immediately in front of his stage.

There is NO WAY this race is 'statistically tied'.

No. Way.

31. I think most of McPalin's supporters are too lazy to get out to see him
If they had any energy, they might actually start looking at the facts, and be lost. No, these folks mostly don't put any energy into thinking about politics, and whatever soundbite they hear that sticks is what they go with.

48. Me Three. Especially after the weekend poll numbers.
The only way they could be "statistically tied" at 44% and 43% right now is if ONLY registered Republicans are being polled. Even assuming the rampant racism so many of us fear, there aren't enough of *them* out there anymore.

Has anyone stumbled on - or even done the numbers themselves - on the number of Americans currently registered as Republicans v. Democrats? As the most important tool they've got for convincing us the race is close enough to steal, the polls need to be discredited. Preferably in advance of the general election.

51. They aren't polling new voters.
If the newly-registered actually follow through and vote, and I believe Obama can motivate them to do so, then the Republicans will be handed a beat-down that will echo through the ages.

28. Jeb was there...
...too. I posted this earlier:

The NERVE of this man is unbelieveable!

I'm sitting here watching CNN cover nearly ALL of McCain's speech today (annoying in itself, seeing how they cut off Obama all the time) and I notice a familiar face in the audience...sitting in the very front, but shown on camera right behind McCain in close-ups. Who do I see? Jeb Bush, sitting next to Governor Crist of Florida.

That in and of itself shocked me...as I thought McCain was trying to distance himself from GW Bush. Apparently Jebbie is okay.

Then, the topper: McCain started complaining about problems in our economy. He said something like (paraphrasing) "We need to stop sending so much of our money to the Middle East." I think he mentioned actual amounts in billions to the audience. He may have even said going to Iraq, but I'll have to rewatch the tape to be sure. But he was complaining...in front of GWB's brother...about the US spending money that eight years of GWB's policies have caused us to spend.

As if he had nothing to do with it. As if Jeb had nothing to do with it. As if eight years of GWB had nothing to do with it. As if eight years of Republican policy in this country had nothing to do with it!

Now, I know he was probably trying to convince Floridians about why offshore drilling ('Drill, baby, drill' policy) is a good idea. But they are assuming the stupidity of the American people when they do this. It's disgusting...and they need to be called on it. Obama/Biden ???

11. People who have early-alzheimers often need notes
my friend had index cards all over her Mom's place with instructions on how to make toast.. reminding her to turn off the water..(they had the stove physically removed).. the only applicances they even trusted her with was a toaster & a small microwave....and after she left paper towels on top of the toaster, they even took that away..

They had a big calendar on the fridge with things on it like.. bath.. brush teeth..comb hair..etc..

after a few months of that, they had to move her into their house, even though she protested..

12. Who's going to go to the circus
if they can't see the bearded lady?

The enthusiasm over Palin is the same as for the circus "freak show." When she's not there, why bother.

All of which makes me doubt more and more that 40 million people tuned in to watch McCain drone on in his convention speech. Those numbers were invented out of thin air to make him appear more popular than Obama.

29. The polls are bullshit.
There's a concerted effort going on to make the polls look close when they're not. I don't buy the line that it's the media trying to drum up a profitable horse race, either. I think it's a prelude to stealing the election.
