This is what happens when government "gets out of the way" -Sarah Palin quote.

Sarah Palin wants to come to DC to "get gov't out of the way" so the free market can work its magic...

Isn't that what we've had for at least 8 years?

Hasn't gov't getting out of the way (i.e., no oversight, no regulation enforcement) been one of the reasons the system has practically melted down?

If we followed the republican mantra of "letting the free market regulate itself" there would be no need to bailout any of these firms. Right? Sink or swim, baby Right?

And if the free market is so good at regulating itself, why are my tax dollars being used to bail them out?

This is known as "socializing" the risk and "privatizing" the profit. This could be called "socialism" but that would be a misnomer. Maybe if these entities that are being bailed out were "nationalized" the "socialism" moniker would be somewhat accurate.

What this is, is none other than FASCISM.

on edit: Reason #648 why "the free market regulates itself" is bullshit.

CREEKSTONE FARMS. Look it up. A cattle industry company that wanted to test 100% of its cows for mad-cow disease to satisfy their buyer - the Japanese gov't - whom requires that all cattle be tested for this disease (hmm imagine that. A gov't that actually protects its consumers), BUT WAS ORDERED TO STOP TESTING BY THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION WHOSE INTEREST WAS IN PROTECTING THE COSTS OF THE CATTLE FARMERS, NOT THE SAFETY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE..........

So an instance of the "market regulating itself" was detered by an administration not interested in consumer protection, but in protecting the financial impact on an industry that testing for mad-caw disease might have....

in other words, if the free market regulates itself in the direction of benefiting the consumer without it having an impact on the stock price of a company, then the "free market" is great. Otherwise, hands off!!! when it comes to my money!!!!

9. No, she's a tool. As Klein makes eminently clear, tools are groomed and propped up
all over, wherever the next "free market" (cough) thieves are lurking. And they use virtually the same language that Sarah Palin is using right now. It's frightening really to watch today's events and listen to SP right here in the US.

I really hope she can be taken down and out before the election.

8. Negative Effects of Deregulation
Under deregulation, the costs of preventive maintenance are no longer automatically passed on to the consumer. In this economic environment, instead of replacing a part on a jet before it breaks, the decision is more often to replace it when it breaks.

Ignoring even seemingly small repairs can have disastrous consequences. In April 1985, for instance, an engine fell off an American Airlines Boeing 727 after being hit by a frozen chunk of disinfectant that seeped out of a broken lavatory toilet. The stool had not been fixed, even though leaks had been reported for five months.

10. Why elect someone to high position in govt, if they think govt should
"get out of the way"? If someone actually thinks "government should get out of the way", why are they running for a government position? Why don't they focus their efforts in a venue they respect?

11. Your wording of the Creekstone issue doesn't frame the story properly.
You frame it as the Japanese government regulating meat inspection and the lack of US government inspection -- where the real issue is the US government stepping-in and preventing a business the freedom to produce a product according to the demands of its customers, where the product would exceed US regulations.

The Bush Admin blocked a company from bringing a product to market because it might be superior to those currently offered in the market.

12. Thank you so much, Postman! This so needed to be pointed
out. The peeps in TV land need to discuss how exactly does Mccain/Palin so-called "reform' differ from the looting and pillaging that we are seeing today.

Yes, Mccain, let's DEREGULATE even more, if that's at all possible! There might be a handful of Americans left out here that have not been completely robbed blind by the policies written and put forth by predatory corporations! Milk us for all that we have left, why don'tcha.

Sorry to hijack, but it feels good to rant a bit.
