Tensions flare at crowded Houston convention center; death toll at 34

HOUSTON - A humanitarian crisis unfolded Monday along the Texas coast as thousands of Hurricane Ike victims clamored for food, water, electricity and gasoline — and found nothing much to go home to except streets littered with piles of debris, spewing sewage, and floodwaters crawling with snakes and alligators.

In Houston, tensions were rising among more than 1,000 who had spent several nights at the George R. Brown Convention Center because most of the city is still without power. They complained that they couldn’t get information about how to get food and clean clothes. The city’s mayor said only 1,300 people were inside, but those sleeping on cots said it felt like thousands.

Lines snaked down side streets at gas stations that had little fuel to sell. Some looked like parking lots. At sites distributing water, ice and prepackaged meals, people stood on foot for hours waiting for anything they could take home.

1. Gee, this looks familiar.
I wonder if they will have to wait 5 days for bottled water like people did at the Superdome.

2. I was listening to a Houston station online last night late and just smiled
they were arguing over who's fault it was that the food was late. I take it that today did not go any better. FEMA was squealing like a pig.

5. Like a pig...
...and all Bushco is doing is looking for some lipstick.

I had a feeling this was not gonna turn out too well. A bad feeling. Seems as if the media has been told to stay off the story.... as if what happened in NOLA was all the media's fault. But this is Bushco Town, and he, without a doubt, will fail them as well.

3. Soon we may be turning our swords into plowshares just to
survive nature's wrath. We won't have many resources left to spend globetrotting if this crap keeps up. Why here is a plowshare now, stopping in for some grub near one of the flooded areas.

4. Reminder: Most Houston residents were told to stay put...
to "shelter-in-place." I keep hearing reporters belittling them for not leaving -- THEY WERE TOLD NOT TO LEAVE! The authorities were worried they'd have another Rita evacuation and the *orders* were for coastline residents to evacuate and most Houston residents to stay. And this is how they now treat people -- FEMA now stands for Fucked Everyone Massively Again. There isn't one damn thing in recent memory the Republicans have done right. Lets see if we can now blame the ENTIRE thing on the Democratic mayor of Houston -- it's HIS fault FEMA hasn't delivered. I'm sure he could have done better as could Perry and the Republicans, but the fact is FEMA fucked up.....again.
