Not to be outdone, here comes the DOW Jones Industrial Average. USA USA!!!

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Dispatch/market-dispatches-091508.aspx

The Dow Jones industrials suffered their biggest point loss since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks today.

At the same time, the major averages fell to their lowest levels in two years because of the collapse of Lehman Bros. (LEH, news, msgs) and deepening concerns about the future of insurance giant American International Group (AIG, news, msgs) and regional banking company Wachovia (WB, news, msgs).

At the close, the Dow Jones industrials were down 504 points, or 4.4%, to 11,917, its lowest close since July 2006. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 58 points, or 4.6%, to 1,194, and the Nasdaq Composite Index was down 81 points, or 3.6%, to 2,180.

EDIT: You know things are screwed up when MSN has a major typo in the story, the Dow closed at 10,917 NOT 11,917

3. Probably back up $400. 'Cause, y'know, "the fundamentals have changed".
Then it'll lose it all over again over the next few days.

It's the "rational market" at work.

4. I have a question
i am not too familiar with economic issues, but i do see the difference of higher taxes, gas, heatlh insurance now as to what is was like eight years ago. I have a sister in law who was arguin with me that her money was fine "thank you", as to her argument that she is financially stable because she has been a grown up person by planning ahead anot not needing anything from the government to bail her out..

Will this economic meltdown of today affect her in some way in her 401k? I don't want anything bad to happen to her, (after all she is family), but do want her to lear her lesson at the same time.. that government can't be bad all the time.. and if its that bad why repbulicans keep running for office to "fix it"...

any insight???

5. Odds are, if here 401k or any of her investments are in stock....
She's lost quite a great deal of money today and over the last six months. Also depends if she's getting matching funds from her employer.
