I can remember when our dollar bills said "Silver Certificate" on them |
Now it's "Federal Reserve Note". Soon it will say "Wipe Here"

3. Yeah, they used to be an item that could be exchanged for something of value. |
Now, they're just paper. Their value is an illusion. And, like all illusions, it only lasts as long as no one questions it.

5. The value of silver was also an illusion. |
Basically people agree that certain substances (gold, silver, diamonds) are worth more than others, but there is nothing inherent in those substances that gives them special value.

7. Dollar bills never said "Silver Certificate" on them. Silver certificates |
said "Silver Certificate" on them. They looked almost identical to dollar bills, with a few changes, which is why people often mistake them for dollar bills. They were backed by silver and printed as an alternative to gold-standard paper currency. They stopped making them by around 1960.
But I'll bet you're right about the "wipe here".
