1. Oh holy hell, they didn't do that, did they

Put on a performance of "Lion King" for a visiting African dignitary???

Reminds me of an event very early in my career. My company was negotiating with a Japanese company to sell them software that I had written. The Japanese company (after signing the deal) sent a high level delegation over to meet with our people. Our company President palmed them off on a VP, who palmed them off on the development manager, who excused himself and palmed them off on my boss, who promptly had me (and two other developers) meet with them. I had no idea this was going to happen until they stopped at my office while being given a tour by the secretary. She told me to take them to lunch and that reservations were already made.

At a Sushi restaurant.

The Japanese VP and his entourage were not amused. He insisted on picking up the check. (A huge insult to me and my company).

They had brought little gifts with them. I gave them a set of company pens.

I've never been so embarrassed in my life (either before this or after this).

This was in Kansas City... and they really wanted to go for a big steak at the Golden Corral or someplace like that.

The contract was for $1.5M... I think better could have been arranged.

The Bushies are just like my former company... they have no class.

3. I've been taken to an American pizza restaurant by Brits
in London -Round Table, I think - and to a California-style restaurant in Tokyo by a Japanese supplier. I'm sure they meant well.

As for Lion King, it wouldn't be my first choice of entertainment for a visiting African dignitary, but who knows, maybe he's a big Disney buff. Or Bush and advisers could be culturally tone-deaf as usual.

4. In London.. I can understand it better, I mean meat pies are not my favorite.

However, there is some of the world's BEST Chinese in London.

5. I like meat pies!
and have yet to find decent Chinese food in Britain. Indian, yes. British food in general has gotten better than it was on my first trip in '84.

Back to the topic: I'd try to treat foreign visitors to a typically American experience (whatever that is). At least Laura isn't dressed too badly in these pics - still kinda weird, though.

Oh well, only 5 months and Michelle Obama can bring some flair to the White House.
