From "Constitutional Peril-The Life and Death Struggle For Our Constitution And Democracy" by Bruce Fein, Palgrave McMillan, Copyright 2008 by Bruce Fein
Chapter Ten Coda
No person with active cerebral faculties can be optimistic about the survival of a Republican form of government and checks and balances in the United States. I testified before the House Judiciary Committee on July 25, 2008, regarding an impeachment inquiry. All pejorative references to President Bush or Vice President Cheney insinuating deceit or impeachable high crimes and misdemeanors were censored under a House rule derived from the British Parliament's prohibition on voicing "irreverence" toward the king!

At present, I do not believe the American people will exert themselves through free speech, the vote, or running for office to make the Constitution's checks and balances and protections against government abuses mean what the Founding Fathers intended them to mean. The vast majority are agnostic between self-government and vassalage to a supreme leader in the White House.

In Concord Hymn, Ralph Waldo Emerson's first stanza versified,
By the rude bridge that arched the flood, Their flag to April's breeze unfurled; Here once the embattled farmers stood; And fired the shot heard around the world.
A commanding of contemporary Americans would not have joined the Minutemen. Their example heard around the world is lawlessness, double standards, and duplicity in the name of national security.

This book is worthwhile to give any friends or family members who haven't grasped the abuses we have undergone. Since it is written by a conservative, you can make your point without being taken that it is because of your political leanings. Maybe it will answer the question for them on why to struggle against this "inexorable tide" Fein writes about and his answer. "The answer is twofold. Anything else would be dishonorable. And you might leave footprints in the sands of time to inspire someone yet to be born to champion freedom in more propitious circumstances."
