The Guardian: A US medical evacuation crew chief recounts the most traumatic mission he has ever flown

<snip>

The first patient, she had her left leg completely blown off. Her right leg was into a mush. It really wasn't much left but muscle. Her left arm was gone, and it was bandaged up. She was one of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen before, and she was adorable, but she was covered in blood and dirt. And it was very hard, 'cause I have a—and she might have been seven, eight years old. I have a five-year-old daughter. It's very hard dealing with kids. Once we realized that these kids were bad off, we threw them on the bird. I took my daughter—or my—sorry—my girl. And my little girl was five years old, and she had—her left leg was mangled. There was really nothing left of it. There was just muscle tissue. It was bad. That was the longest flight I've ever had. It was only a couple of minutes, but it was the longest flight. The little girl with the tri-amputees, she had a thousand-yard stare, where she's just kind of staring off into space. She was already given drugs for pain, but she was already fading out. My little girl, I was holding her hand and I was comforting her as best as I can. It's very hard, because they are scared of the US soldiers. And it's very hard, because there's a language barrier, and you're trying to. But love is an international sign, and everybody can speak that international language. You can hold them and show them affection, but show them that it's going to be okay, even though they are scared and there's nothing you can do about it.

I had a very hard problem, a very hard time. I could not look at the girl with the tri-amputees. It was very cowardice to know that this was this little girl's last breaths on earth, and she was in the back of a helicopter, and there was nothing I could do about it. There was—I—it was hard just to know that she was going to die and that I didn't have the common courtesy to at least look at her and hold her. And that's something that's rough, and it's hard to look at somebody knowing that they're going to die and there's nothing you can do about it. Our little girl, she was fading away. And if only we can get her fast enough, only if we can get her into the FST fast enough, we can maybe save her. And once we pulled them out, we had to make the decision, because we still had three or four more urgent surgicals in the back of , we had to make the decision to put on the fricking ground and take off. And that was—you can't. You can't do that. You can't, as a human, leave another human hurt on the ground. But we had to do it.

And, you know, we're 24 years old, we're, you know, 25, 26. We're young. Who says we need to make that decision? But we had to, because we had to save those other lives. I've never had so much blood in a helicopter before. And you're there, you're washing, but you can't wash it all out. Like, there's always stuff there. It's always in your nooks and crannies. The smell is always there. It'll never go away. And that was the worst mission—one of the worst missions I—that was the worst mission I've ever been on. It shut me down for awhile.

1. The vast majority just die in the rubble and debris of their homes and streets
Edited on Tue Sep-16-08 01:03 PM by tuckessee
If they're lucky they get to an understaffed, overworked, run down "hospital" that's sorely lacking in even the most basic of medical necessities.

Such is the glory of Liberation.

2. I almost lost it when he said "my daughter."

May the fiends who instigated this horrific war burn and rot in the deepest circles of whatever hell there may be, for all of eternity.

6. Citizens and voters have to take responsibility for what they let their government do.
.
.
.

Ultimate responsibility for the warmongers in the WH belong to the voters, Joe six-pac and the rest of the citizens who are afraid to "rock the boat.

Running away, and/or just sitting back and complaining don't scare/deviate the warmongers from their path.

US-American citizens are responsible for their own problems, as well as the problems they let their government unleash upon the rest of the World.

A song from Michael Jackson comes to mind, "The man in the mirror" -

Right -

If ya wanna make a change, take a look at yourself, then do it . .

But no,

Let your friggen government murder and massacre to the point of genocide all over the World, - not your problem, right?

WRONG

And it's too late now,

The rest of the World has the USA in it's sights, and not all the bluster and bombs can save it now as a World power.

Best scenario IMO -

USA just high-tails all their military shit back to the USA and start taking care of it's own citizens.

A decade or two of just minding it's own business and taking care of its own citizens just might regain some of the World's respect - -

Ya,

I know - -

I'm dreaming . .

(sigh)

9. Um.. what exactly makes you think I take the "not my problem" attitude?

Or that I've run away or just sat back complaining?

I know full well what this government has been doing in my name, and I have not silently sat by. You don't know me, so I really take quite a bit of offense when you say I've "Let (my) friggen government murder and massacre to the point of genocide all over the World, - not (my) problem, right?"

You wanna take that attitude, I got plenty of people you can point it toward, but you ain't gonna point it toward me.

11. Geeze - take a breath - I know that not ALL United States citizens are idiots -
.
.
.

Just too many - -

Dunno why you took my comments as a personal attack,

but maybe that's part of the problem of the whole USAmerican psyche . . .

Sure as hell is SOMETHING wrong down there . . .

10. ummm...
I'm not denying any responsibility, but:

CorpoMedia ignores Iran Contra scandal of 80's - leaves Bush 41 with a pretty decent reputation and Ronnie Raygun almost a frickin' saint.

CorpoMedia hounds Clinton into a corner, and keeps him there, mostly. Lets him out briefly to sign NAFTA (a Raygun/Bush creation that the DLC embraced).

CorpoMedia aids & abets the theft of the 2000 election, especially in Florida.

CorpoMedia fails to criticize Bush 43 for allowing 9/11 on his watch, then cheerleads his rushes to wars during 2002 and onwards.

CorpoMedia ignores torture, warrantless wiretapping, etc. as much as possible for as long as possible. Allows war criminals like Rumsfeld onto public airwaves to make outrageous and largely un-rebutted claims about Abu Ghraib such as 'a few bad apples.'

CorpoMedia aids & abets the theft of the 2004 electionespecially in Ohio.

CorpoMedia is not owned by (many) US citizens. Public interests are not served by the present use of the public airwaves.

We US citizens have been used as tax-paying pawns in a much larger game. I saw through the Bush-lies early on, and tried to do a bit to counter them, but my voice and tens of thousands of others was dwarfed by the CorpoMedia. If you really need a culprit to point fingers at, then that's your devil right there. But lay off the folks who are trying to raise their kids and pay for the roof over their heads, OK?

And what happens down in the USA affects me here in Canada

I don't post a whole lot, but this is a very important election in the USA

So if I can influence ONE mind to push for REAL democracy,

Then my keyboarding is well worth the effort.

I think many do not consider how many people READ this board, but never participate.

From what I've seen lately on this board,

I think I'm speaking to them . . .

Figure it out.

13. You may be "speaking" to them with your "keyboarding," but you responded to me personally.

Maybe try jumping off that freaking high horse you seem to be on, and your "keyboarding" might "influence" a few more minds.

Figure it out yourowndamnself.

.
.
.

I really DO want to hear what those that disagree with me have to say.

But to take every response personal,

Well, thank the goddess I don't do THAT!

And I don't yours.

no horse here . .

3. Wow...I had to fight the tears...
I watched the whole video, and that soldier's testimony was so devastating and so moving.

I feel for him so much. The story he told about the little girls was just heartbreaking.
You can tell, just from his body language and facial expressions, that he is traumatized
by this experience, and by the totality of his war experience.

I wish I knew more about this soldier---SGT. SCHACHT. Where is he from? Will he have access
to counselors, round-the-clock, when he returns home? He will need them. He deserves them.

He was obvious that he was additionally affected, because he has a daughter who is the same
age as the girls who were mortally wounded in his helicopter.

He said he has nightmares. Obviously, he's got PTSD symptoms currently. He'll have to hold it all
in until he's away from the trauma. It's going to come flowing out of him, once he's off the
battlefield.

We need to keep track of this young man. The fact that he's talking about this is a good sign.

I'm just...moved, and so sad...and so concerned for this young soldier. The mom in me just
wants to hug him and tell him it's ok to cry.

That was tough.

Took me back almost 40 years.

This should show in every High School, every Church, and every Home in this Country.

7. that will never happen
this war/occupation's death toll will not be known to the general public for a very long time. It is truly horrendous what is done in our name and most folks have no idea, No IDEA the carnage/death and destruction exported by the USA around the world under the guise of
"Freedom"! It sickens me beyond belief.

8. This is what we're doing. The apathetic and the careless.
This is why I sit here today in a state of distress that anyone I know would not be concerned enough to vote.

IF, just if, we had the news on tv, Americans would recoil in disgust. Bush would not have had a second term. He would be in a cell with the rest of his friends.

I don't think Americans know just what is happening, and just how horrible it is.

Damn them to hell.
