The anxiety and bed-wetting that many Democrats have been experiencing about the state of the presidential race over the past few weeks should be subsiding as the Palin effect is wearing off and we're seeing clear signs that the McCain bounce is over and the pendulum is swinging back to Obama. Effectively, the race has reverted to where it stood before the political conventions.

Today's four daily tracking polls show a clear trend towards Obama over the past four days. Since state polls tend to be lagging indications -- and they're much more dated -- we should see those numbers settling back in the next week.

No wonder he's acting like a raging weasel in heat today.

The race is pretty much dead even. Last week, the McCain camp
was on top of the world and Palin was a phenomena.

Now, the lights have dimmed.

Folks, if McCain is all ready flat--after releasing the Palin-shiny-object
on America--he's really in trouble.

These numbers reflect a shore-up in his base--but virtually no movement of
Dems toward him and no movement of Indies to his camp.

This is terrific news for Obama. The Indies will eventually fall in line
for Obama, and the Dems will all be home as well--and McCain knows he can't
win if that happens.

Remember...Palin was his "Hail Mary pass." While it appears that the pass was
caught, there's been a fumble on the 50-yard line.

9. The Hail Mary pass was complete for a touchdown

Unfortunately, McCain was behind 50-14 when he launched the pass, and time has just about run out.

I think the Democrats were indeed discombobulated for a couple of days by the choice of Palin, but they seem to have figured out how to overcome Ms. Thin Resume. The popular media folks are, as always, several days behind events, and are still flogging their favorite “Democrats-in-disarray” narrative. But both Obama and Biden have made very telling points in the last couple of days, and even some of the talking chuckleheads have noticed that neither McCain nor Palin can keep their stories quite straight. McCain’s “everything is fine” speech in the morning, followed by “everything is in crisis” speech in the afternoon was just a bit too disjointed to be completely ignored.

Democrats need to keep hitting the Republicans with every flip-flop, every change of emphasis, every lie they put out. The rapid response by the Obama campaign has been something to see, and the GOP isn’t used to seeing their narratives trounced one after another quite so efficiently.
