What makes us Dems different from repubs? What is the general concensus?
In discussing the election w/folks, I find that every Democrat I have talked to brings up specific things they'd like to see in the good old USA: better government, better health care, better education, better environment, etc.

EVERY GOPer I have talked to studiously AVOIDS any topic that is to the betterment of the country as a whole. Instead all I hear from repubs is taxes, capital gains, inheritance.

I can only conclude that we are much more ... what's the word ... altruistic, while they are quite selfish. Is this a gross generalization? I try not to engage the Koolaid drinkers often but when I do I want to throttle them!

I had to rib my GOP LESBIAN neighbor (I tell her "THEY HATE YOU!") who was toodling off to brunch and waved at me Sunday PM while I was sweating while weeding and raking the neighborhood entrance marker 'garden'. I said "We Democrats do for others while you are out sucking up brunch." We had a good laugh but I meant it! All the care about is goddamn money. What's with that?

1. Easy.
We believe that we are all in this thing together. We believe that looking out for our fellow human beings is the right thing to do and that our society is better off in every way (morally, emotionally and financially) by doing so. Republicans believe that you are on your own. Period.

2. I believe they lack a capacity for empathy, which I think puts them lower on the evolutionary scale
My opinion, but this is what I believe, and it fits in well with what you talk about, this fixation on money for self.

just asking this question makes our side different...introspection. The other side never asks questions like this they don't know and they don't care because anyone who doesn't think like them (in their opinion) is slime or evil or whatever.

10. Thank you all. Those were goooooood answers. I like being validated! :-)
I know it's wrong to generalize and I DO know some pubs who are decent (they SHOULD be dems) and I know some shit dems but I swear, you all are right on the money.

Even if (God forbid) we should lose this battle (we won't!) I know we are winning the war. I know that sounds trite but it reassures me that I'm on the right team. Not that I would have or ever have considered the (ick!) alternative!

Go Obama/Biden!
