He could not be resuscitated. He was 85.

You had a great dad who got to live a full life and he left the earth without the indignity of prolonged illness and being bedridden.

My wife lost her mom at age 61, about 7 years ago, and since then I have mentally gone through the process of losing my folks - it just seems so inevitable and SOON now (although they are still healthy and active), not a faraway figment like in childhood or in my 20s. And of course the fact that I will be joining them not so long after is also never far from my mind.

My aunt lost both her daughter and her son in separate car crashes - one was in her teens, the other was in his early 20s. Now she is all alone - I honestly don't know how she faces each day.


Those of us who were fortunate enough to have our parents with us through adulthood, living full lives, those of us who know our own kids will outlive us, are so fortunate.


I don't know if this is the kind of condolence you want to hear, but it's what goes through my mind when I read this sort of thing. My heart genuinely does go out to you.

But be thankful for all those good years you had that others are capriciously robbed of by fate.

What a terrible shock for you and your family. It sounds like he was feeling pretty good, though, right up till the end, and that is a wonderful thing--however painful it is for those he left behind to lose him so suddenly.

I wish you could have had just a little more time to prepare yourself. But whatever your spiritual beliefs, in a very real way he can be with you any time you summon him with a memory.

will come a time that you feel his presence out of the blue. It's not the same as being able to hug him close, but in some ways it is even more personal. I don't mean like a ghost or anything, but it is definitely a spiritual thing that will bring you strength and even happiness. I don't know what your view of religion is, but even if you're not religious you know that he lives on through you. He fathered you, he raised you right, he taught you, he loved you. Those things never die and in fact are passed on generation to generation.

I am so very sorry for your loss and wish you all the best. When my father died I grieved long and hard. That was best for me, instead of keeping it inside and prolonging it even more.

88 (he had COPD and ws on oxygen for years). Unfortunately, he WAS resuscitated, but was not only brain-dead but also kidney-dead and muscles-other-than-the-heart-dead, and lung-dead, and, well, you get my drift. He wouldn't have even lasted more than a couple more days on life support, but we had him turned off PDQ.

Sometimes the kindest course is to let the dead remain dead. May we ALL have 85 years.
