I have thrown away my "Texas" coffee mug
I am fan of cowboys.
I like cowboy movies and cowboy music and the whole cowboy mystique.

Yesterday on the job site somebody there told me they thought I must be a W supporter because of my "Texas" travel mug.

I have thrown it away because I certainly don't want to be sending that message.

I am in mourning cause I liked the mug. It was a father's day gift from my daughter several years ago.

IS TEXAS INEXTRICABLY LINKED TO W FOR ALL TIME NOW?

56. Bush is SCARED of cows and horses. Terrified of them.
That's why you'll never see them at his "ranch." This guy never even talked with that ridiculous accent he fakes until after he was president.

The main difference between a cowboy and George Bush is that a cowboy has the shit on the outside of his boots, not the inside.

I don't blame Connecticut any more than I blame Midland, Texas, where he met his future wife, Laura "the Killer" Bush.

32. Why do you make offensive posts like that one? It's against the rules here.
Stop bashing Texas. It's a state. It's ten percent of the US population.

California produced Reagan. Do you despise it?

New York produce Rudy Ghouliani. Do you despise it?

Blaming a state for the politicians it produces is stupid, and I wish you'd stop doing it.

40. I guess Texans are bad at arithmetic, too.
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 11:46 AM by TahitiNut
The population of Texas in the 2000 Census was 22,118,509, or 7.6% of the population of the U.S. which was 290,809,777. Guess what? 7.6% is NOT equal to "ten percent."

I've lived in Texas, Michigan, Alabama, New York, California, Connecticut, and Washington. I've traveled to every state in the U.S. - some, of course, more than others. I speak from personal experience and from a knowledge of the statistics regarding education, taxation, and other social factors.

Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 12:27 PM by TahitiNut
... in 2004 as compared to the national average is, de facto, a state that has more assholes per capita than most. Texas qualifies.

Q.E.D.

 Clearly, conservatives and idiots might disagree.

Maybe you have a problem with reading comprehension? To say that there are "more assholes per capita than most" is NOT to say that ALL are assholes. There's no broad-brush and no besmirching of non-assholes. It's merely an observation based on FACTS.

In 1994, Texas elected George W. Bush over Ann Richards by a margin of 7% (53% to 46%). To then deny state "ownership" of the pathological narcissist after an election that, by any measure, would be called a "landslide" is an exercise in baseless, delusional denialism.

And I have some very strong ones myself. But I know that if that opinion may offend someone in my general vicinity, then I try to restrain myself. Like I said, that (imo) went too far. And I doubt you would say such a thing like that to folks in person. It just doesn't sound like you, that's all.

I am a Texas, born, bred, and raised in the great Lone Star State.

And, George W Bush is as Texan as I am.

I do not like his politics or his beliefs. But I will support his right to be a Texan with my dying breath.

You see, it matters to us, this being Texan - and I will not allow you to say he's not one.

If he's lived the majority of his life here, and he calls it home - he's one of us.

Insane much? :eyes:

Yes ... he IS a Texan ... AND an American .. and a shame and embarrassment to all who share that political identity. As an American, I'm appalled at OUR cowardice and corruption that's allowed the gross criminality done IN OUR NAME.

It's delusional to hide behind CHILDISH denialism. WE own him and he's OUR problem. The fact we've not properly, morally, and responsibly dealt with these WAR CRIMNALS and MURDERERS is a condemnation of ALL of us.

If rats are nesting and feeding on my neighbor's property, it'd be INSANE of me to NOT point it out to him (and offer assistance where I could). Likewise, it's INSANE to patronize the denialists who attempt to hide in some delusion that the political processes in their 'yard' are spawning such plague-ridden rats.

I was born and reared in Michigan but spent the bare majority of my life living all all over the US in other states. Me and my family's involvement in the State of Michigan has been overwhelmingly in support of liberals and organized labor - my uncle was on Soapy Williams' staff and my family were friends of Walther Reuther and his family. At the same time, it's with SHAME that I acknowledge this state spawned the likes of Engler and Abraham and that my Congresscritter is Joe Knollenberg - a complete facist fuck!

There's a lot of good about Texas that W will never be able to taint no matter how hard he tries. My late father was a Texan, a true Texan from his hat down to his boots. I saved this email that he sent to *W and copied me on,maybe it will help with a little perspective.

Subject: WHY????

Mr. President, I cannot understand why you persist in taking away from those
of us who have the least in this life. We working types have only one way to
make enough money to have anything extra in life and that is to learn a
skill or trade, join a union and participate in collective bargaining in
order to make the most we can out of our lot in life. Not everyone can sit
in an office and prop our feet up on a desk and figure out how to get rich
on the backs of those people out there doing the work without breaking a
sweat ourselves. And most of the people like me love to actually do hard
work and are satisfied at the end of the day with what we have produced as
well as being proud of it.

But I think you should take a little time to think about who it is that
really makes this world go 'round. Then perhaps you will stop trying to
destroy the only medium available to us to bargain for our share of the pie.
And stop trying to force us back into the age where we were standing outside
the gate waiting for someone to die or get fired in order to make a vacancy
so we could get a job at any price. It was pitiful back then and it is more
pitiful today.

Although I am retired on a Teamster pension and Social Security, I have
children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who need a place in life
where they can also make a decent living. Too bad you never had to stand in
our boots. Perhaps you could better understand how detrimental what you are
doing really is.

Sincerely, J M, a native born Texan

30. Trust me!
As a native born Texan, please trust me when I say that simply living in Texas does not make one a Texan.

And George Bush ain't (that's right, I said "ain't) a real Texan!

Being a Texan is more than simple geography. Being a Texan involves an unspoken honor code of helping those less fortunate than yourself, it involves big hearts and open minds, and it involves integrity and compassion.

Naw (that's right, I said "naw"), George Bush ain't a Texan. And many people who move into this state and live here aren't real Texans, either. They read a history book, move down here and THINK they are a Texan, but those of us who are the real thing know better. And seeing those imposters call themselves Texans makes us real Texans very sad.

Now...I'm sure this same situation is true for many of the other states, so I don't mean to monopolize the concept, but keep your Texas mug and display it proudly. And when they ask you if it reminds you of "W", why don't you just say, "naw" (yeah, you can say "naw" if you want to) - - - this mug reminds me of Ann Richards, Barbara Jordan, the Alamo, the University of Texas, etc., some good barbecue and Mexican food, some good beer and some good friends, but no it doesn't remind me of that dipstick.

47. Well good thing the mug did not say, "World's Greatest Dad".
The mug was a father's day gift, if you throw shit away that your daughter gave you because of the ignorance of others I don't even know what say.

Would you like a sticker that says "Texas: America's Death Camp"?

54. The ignorance here is astonishing.
The Bushes are not the only (and weren't the first) President from Texas, and, as someone else pointed out, they're actually from Connecticut.

(And here I was thinking I was on Democratic Underground.)

58. The bigotry evidenced and tolerated here is astonishing, too.
Can you imagine a similar thread lambasting blacks, or gays, or women here? Of course not. It wouldn't be allowed, as well it shouldn't.

Can you imagine a similar thread about California, because of Ronald Reagan, or New York, because of Rudy Guiliani?

59. I see no bigotry, no lambasting of anyone
You are too sensitive
its about the automatic associations people make, rightly or wrongly, Texas is linked in peoples minds with W.
I never realized until yesterday how strong and widespread that association is.

60. None so blind as those who will not see.
I'm not being too sensitive. I'm being rational. You're being absurd. You caved into criticism and evidenced cowardice in doing so.

61. Not sure about bigotry, but Texas was the birthplace and home of none other than LBJ.
(oh, and Ike was born there, but soon left thereafter.)

I live in Arizona and I'm already concerned that if McAsshole winds up president then people will have the same loathing for my state.

65. Here's why a good liberal should LOVE Texas!
Texas is the state of Molly Ivins and Ann Richardson.

Texas has counties in it that are more solidly BLUE than San Francisco.

Texas is the winter home of the Whooping Crane, and a birding Mecca.

Three million Texans voted for Kerry in 2004.

Texas has some of the BEST Mexican food you've ever had.

Some of my best friends are Texans.

Texas combines beautiful beaches, rolling rangeland, fertile farmland, interesting scrubland, and delicious margaritas.

I am the PROUD owner of a "Don't Mess With Texas" shot glass, and I may just have to go fill it.

67. Some of the best Mexican food?
Only some.

Hell, we rock the planet down here.

Wrap your minds around the concept of living in a land full of DeLays, Bushes, and Perrys - and still having a sense of humor!

And don't forget the Dixie Chicks are Texans, too.

Yes, we rock it.

72. As a native Texan displaced for the time being,
I can vouch for everything you've listed with glee!
I actually know very few rethugs from Tejas.
Also, some of the most wonderful folks in the world reside in the lone star state!
I left my heart there!

Thanks for posting this.

world. - for the better

Sam Houston - the only sitting governor to OPPOSE secession from the Union. Yeah, the people of Texas fired him for it - but he did it anyway

Ann Richards

Lloyd Bentsen

Lyndon Johnson, and his beautiful wife, Lady Bird

Jim Hightower

Molly Ivins

Dan Rather

Bill Moyers

Sissy Farenthold

NOW GO GET THAT DAMN CUP OUTTA THE TRUCK - AND USE IT PROUDLY!
