NATIONAL CHECK IF I CAN VOTE DAY
In light of the lead story on this blog, I am posting my proposal once again.

The MICAH Project in Tacoma, Washington along with America in Solidarity is proposing that every liberal/progressive blog, web site and organization declare that October 1, 2008 be declared NATIONAL CHECK IF I CAN VOTE DAY or for short GUARANTEE YOUR VOTE DAY. By joining this call you commit to either emailing, texting or phoning your supporters with a nudge to check on the the status of their voter registration.

Just last week two distressing news item were reported: In New Jersey 3000,000 folks found out that even though they thought they were registered to vote, actually are not on the rolls. Either they had been purged, or never made it there in the first place. In Michigan, the Republican County Auditors stated that any one whose home is in any stage of foreclosure will be stripped from the rolls. These are just two examples of what is going on. We all remember what happened in Florida in 2000 and in New Mexico and Ohio in 2004. Let us take steps to be proactive this time rather than reactive.

We feel that three goals can accomplished by this call to action: 1) The practical aspect of making sure are supporters are actually registered and able to vote. By doing this on this day, there would be time to correct any problems spotted BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE! Most states have a 30 or 14 day preregistration requirement in order to be able to vote.

2) If enough of us take up this call, then it could achieve "critical mass" and be noticed by the main stream press. We could then have spokespeople discussing the problems of electoral manipulation that has taken place in the previous two presidential elections.

3) It may put Republican Secretary's of State, County Auditors and poll workers on notice that the progressive movement will be much proactive is protecting individuals voting rights and much more vigilant in working towards the integrity of the electoral process this time around.

We realize that this is a small step to take, it would only require an email or such on that day by your organization and a few minutes of your supporters time to get the peace of mind that their registrations are ok. If you feel this has merit, please by all means run with it and tweak it as your own. Please SPREAD THE WORD> In order to be effective it will need massive cooperation to succeed. More more information please email Mike Collier at micah.project@yahoo.com or check Todd Iverson's web site guaranteemyvote.com Thank you for you help with this project.

In Solidarity,

Mike Collier MICAH Project chair-Tacoma, Washington
