Michigan Jobless Rate Up To 8.9%; Highest Rate Since 1992.

Michigan's ailing labor market took another turn for the worse during August as the state’s unemployment rate rose four-tenths of a percentage point to 8.9%. That marked the state’s highest jobless rate since 1992.

“Manufacturing jobs fell in August due to continued restructuring and adjustments in production schedules within the auto industry,” said Rick Waclawek, director of the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth’s Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives. “Some auto and auto-parts manufactures extended July retooling layoffs into August.”
