Even then, it wasn't the funds themselves that were supported, but rather what they held - "full faith and credit" and all that.

A bank money market acct is fdic protected. Your brokerage acct might (probably) has a non-fdic fund. Some are privately insured against loss but non guarantee that the value will always be dollar for dollar.
