I didn't take pics, but here's a link to a story with some video from the Michigan Live website:
http://blog.mlive.com/annarbornews/2008/09/michael_moore_debuts_slacker_u.htmlTRY A NEW WRENCH!That was Michael Moore's line when he talked about his chats with blue-collar white working guys around central, northern and western Michigan, trying to convince the skittish ones why they should vote for Obama. "If the wrench you're using isn't working, try a new wrench" he said, as more than 2,500 people packed into every corner of the Michigan Theater screamed!
Anyway, last nite was GRRREATTT! The line to get into the Michigan Theater went all the way down Liberty and around the corner along University Avenue in downtown Ann Arbor. (For those unfamiliar with AA, that's the heart of the city, right next to the Diag on the University of Michigan's central campus). College students, aging hippies, earth mothers and fathers, middle-of-the road everyday people - in essence, everybody - was lined up for the premiere. We got in line at 3:45 (for the 5 p.m. event) and didn't think we were going to get in (but we did). Voter registration volunteers, Obama campaign volunteers, animal rights groups and Dem candidates for various offices in Michigan were all working the line, collecting money and signing up forces.
Inside, we grabbed seats in the upper balcony. The Michigan Theater is a big theater, but it was filled to the rafters. Michael Moore, being the great guy he is, did a second show at 9:30 for all the people who couldn't get in.
Anyway, Michael Moore spoke for about an hour and a half, with his trademark mix of humor, anger and passion. He joked that he was going to field-dress a moose on stage, then asked the crowd if they'd let someone they've known for six weeks (ala Palin) watch their house and their children while they were away. As usual he was great, taking the crowd to a crescendo when he talked about how unreported the youth vote was in 2004, and how that was nothing compared to what the youth vote (which doesn't show up in the "likely voter" category in polls) will be in 2008, and it will send Obama to a landslide! (I'm still recovering my hearing from the roar at that point!) I won't give away too many details, because CSPAN was there recording it.
"Slacker Uprising" was great. A fun, fast-moving chronicle of his college tour before the 2004 election. Riotously funny and inspiring, it really does show how influential he is. (Don't want to serve as spoiler, but you'll be screaming from the "Amen" corner when he takes a question from a reporter about Fahrenheit 9/11 being "propaganda" then turns it around on her about the propaganda that led to the Iraq invasion). And the scenes where he interviews the Repugs protesting him at various campuses are HILARIOUS! - It confirms unequivocally that college Repugs are among the least-evolved, dumbest mofos on the face of this planet.
Anyway, download it as soon as you can, and check the CSPAN schedule to see when they're going to air his lecture from the Ann Arbor premiere.
Mike rules the world!
