Their house survived Ike, but it's the only one left
Warren and Pam Adams lost a house to Hurricane Rita in 2005, so it seems they'd be relieved to learn their new home withstood Hurricane Ike.

Ike's storm surge last week devastated the Bolivar Peninsula town, flattening most of the roughly 200 homes there. The couple's yellow house at the beach -- supported 14 feet off the ground by wooden columns -- was the only house on Gilchrist's Gulf Coast side not to be flattened.

"As we got there, the tears started flowing," Warren Adams, 63, said Thursday after his first visit to the home since evacuating. "There's a yellow house sitting there, but that's all. It was devastating."

Although the house is there, it might not continue to stand. Huge storm surges walloped the interior, making it uninhabitable and destroying many belongings.

3. I find this story infuriating
Losing a home on the beach to one hurricane should have convinced them that well, duh, houses on the beach need to be cheap and disposable, not grand edifices with trophy kitchens and stuffed to the rafters with antiques and expensive electronics.

Continuing to rebuild expensive mansions on the beach is a losing proposition both short and long term. Our beaches are fragile and that land should be considered temporary, with no deeds allowed. If people have to think in terms of a five year lease along the shoreline, perhaps their buildings will get more sensible and appropriate to the environment.

Compensate people for loss, certainly. Just don't allow them to rebuild in the same stupid place. After all, as we're finding out more and more every day, we're no longer made of money.

5. I agree with you 100%
It's bad for the environment and it makes no sense.
Think about the amount of debris that will be dumped somewhere else now.

Well now they've lost two such homes. More debris.
