Palin, witchcraft, and radical evangelism... This is much worse than a "really bad Disney movie"...
You just can't make this stuff up. This is not even a "really bad Disney movie", it's more like a scene from an asylum.

EXHIBIT 1: Palin credits her success in the race for Alaska governor to prayer of Pastor Thomas Muthee...

… who, interestingly enough, happens to be a practitioner of “spiritual warfare” and… uh, a witchhunter.

Times Online (UK) describes some of his exploits here: http://timesonline.typepad.com/uselections/2008/09/palin-linked-el.html

To make a long story short, he publicly declared a local town woman a witch, blamed car crashes and the crime rate on her and organized a massive crusade against her. The poor woman got completely ostracized and almost got stoned, and eventually was forced to leave town.

After the spirit was broken, the crime rate dropped to almost zero and there was “explosive church growth” while almost every bar in the town closed down.

Pastor Muthee has frequently referred to this witchhunt in his sermons as an example of the power of “spiritual warfare”. In October 2005, he delivered ten sermons at the Wasilla Assembly of God, the audio of which was available on the church’s website until it was removed around the time Mrs Palin’s candidacy was announced.

It was during that these sermons that Mrs Palin, who was then preparing for her gubernatorial run, was anointed by Pastor Muthee. His intercession, she says, was “awesome”.

In video footage of the speech, she is seen saying: “As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he’s so bold. And he was praying “Lord make a way, Lord make a way.” “And I’m thinking, this guy’s really bold, he doesn’t even know what I’m going to do, he doesn’t know what my plans are. And he’s praying not “oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,” no, he just prayed for it. He said “Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And that’s exactly what happened.”

She then adds: “So, again, very very powerful, coming from this church,” before the presiding pastor comments on the “prophetic power” of the event.

Note that this took place in...

the Wasilla Assembly of God’s Masters’ Commission, which, as Pastor Ed Kalins explains, believes Alaska will be the refuge for American evangelicals upon the coming “End of Days”

... and, as explained in the Christian Science Monitor article that originally reported on the Muthee story,

Pentecostals approach Scripture literally, so they see the world populated with demons. It is not a far step to start naming them, assigning them territories, devising prayer strategies. For Pentecostals, 'spiritual warfare' is not a metaphor - it's reality.

This is where it gets bad.

EXHIBIT 2: Baptist minister Howard Bess, who wrote a book Palin wanted banned and who fought her on abortion and gay rights, says the country should fear her election.

This is an absolutely chilling article, you should read it all. It describes, among other things, her “anti-abortionist”, “anti-homosexual”, and “pro-creationist” activities, as well as her apocalyptic beliefs/visions.

According to Bess, the 80-year-old retired Baptist Pastor,

"At this point, people in this country don't grasp what this person is all about. The key to understanding Sarah Palin is understanding her radical theology."

"She scares me," said Bess. "She's Jerry Falwell with a pretty face.

Bess is unnerved by the prospect of Palin -- a woman whose mind is given to dogmatic certitude -- standing one step away from the Oval Office. "It's truly frightening that someone like Sarah has risen to the national level," Bess said. "Like all religious fundamentalists -- Christian, Jewish, Muslim -- she is a dualist. They view life as an ongoing struggle to the finish between good and evil. Their mind-set is that you do not do business with evil -- you destroy it. Talking with the enemy is not part of their plan. That puts someone like Obama on the side of evil.

"Forget all this chatter about whether or not she knows what the Bush doctrine is. That's trivial. The real disturbing thing about Sarah is her mind-set. It's her underlying belief system that will influence how she responds in an international crisis, if she's ever in that position, and has the full might of the U.S. military in her hands. She gave some indication of that thinking in her ABC interview, when she suggested how willing she would be to go to war with Russia.

Bess said that he and fellow valley residents have long been charmed by the Sarah Palin who is now dazzling the American public. “She's the most charming person you'll ever know."

"But," Bess adds, "this person's election would be a disaster for the country and the world."

7. This choice was NOT an accident
Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 11:49 PM by dgibby
She was chosen specifically because of her religious beliefs, not in spite of them. This was done to play to the fundies in the party, to bring the base back into the fold, since they do not like or trust McCain. She, and many others, are Dominionists (reconstructionists. They believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible, especially the Old Testament Laws. Most importantly, they believe that the Bible supersedes the Constitution, and that the Constitution needs to be "brought into line" with the Bible in order to bring the USA under the dominion of Christ, thereby creating a Theocracy. They also believe that everyone must convert to Christianity. They have been working under the radar for years, and most of the rest of us have dismissed them as kooks--BIG MISTAKE! They are very well funded, and are connected to many "secular" front groups. You could probably compare them to the Rev. Moon's organization, as far as fund raising, proselytizing, etc, is concerned. They are, imo, a force with which to be reckoned. Zealots are dangerous, and religious zealots are the most dangerous of all. It would be a grave mistake to dismiss them.

14. RIght - their tentacles are everywhere - do your schools have the "Character First!" character
program? Is your town a "City of Character"? Has Character First! infiltrated your police department?
These are all Reconstructionist/dominionist front groups founded by Bill Gothard. He's also behind some of the "boot camps" for juvenile offenders.
Blackwater is also tied to far-out Dominionists.

Someone at Kos who is an escapee from a coercive dominionist group has written some very well-researched and detailed articles about Palin's ties to these people (also dozens of articles about dominionism in general, with good links). See this thread for the most recent one: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4018185

2. But... but.
she's STILL on a mission from god, right?

This is almost as good as the Moslem cleric who issued the death edict against Mickey Mouse today...

I guess I can dig it, except Mickey Mouse cartoons make a lot more sense than the Bible or Koran, plus they make you laugh harder.

And Mickey never told me I was born with a bad strike against me, and was most likely going to burn in hell forever.

Still, 72 virgins is a lot to consider, as long as I don't actually have to marry any of them...

seriously, he didn't start "getting messages directly from Jesus" until long after he got elected. (i meant, selected.)

this is just freaky. ::: Palin and nuclear football ::: scary thought.

it BOGGLES THE MIND that these two even got nominated, let alone may win the election.

11. Actually, Bush subscribes to many of these beliefs
Rigidity of thinking, good vs evil, everything black or white-no gray area, certitude that he is right because God tells him what to do, vindictive, authoritarian, the world is an evil place populated with evil people who want to do evil to us. In fact, this is the basis for his foreign policy. Doesn't talk to evil countries until they capitulate to his edicts. Not good. Not good at all.

6. Your link under "exhibit 2" doesn't work. That excerpt came from an excellent article by David
Talbot of Salon.com -- http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/09/15/bess/

I heartily second your recommendation that everyone should read the entire article -- scary as hell.

Thanks for this thread. This is info that needs to get out there.

17. Now I'm confused. How does Muthee fit in with the Dominionist aspect?
There are many links with her (and her church)to the Christian Dominionist movement which is very racist.

I am thrown to see this Pastor Muthee is black.

I know that's not the gist of this newest revelation and that his extremist views (to say the least) are what is being discussed, but how do her *cough* "alleged" dominionist ties fit with this picture of Muthee being involved?

Is there a natural fit for both aspects that reconciles them in some way: her dominionist beliefs and also following this crazy Muthee person?

18. Palin needs to be questioned about her church's link to radical groups esp. Joel's Army
A poster at Kos has been tracking dominionist and other cultish groups for some time now and has been writing on Palin's connections here http://dogemperor.dailykos.com/

Sarah Palin: Dominionist Stalking Horse
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/29/163234/559/495/579213

The big news, obviously, in the blogosphere today is John McCain's surprise pick for the Republican veep nominee--a relative unknown by the name of Sarah Palin, whom--at least in the more conventional political circles--would appear to be a complete cypher.

Unfortunately, if one digs just a bit deeper, Palin is found to have some very interesting--and very disturbing--connections...among them, being potentially the first Assemblies-linked VP candidate and having a number of links to dominionist groups targeting kids via "bait and switch" evangelism.

Sarah Palin's connections that McCain doesn't want you to know about

There are quite a number of extremely troubling links between Sarah Palin and neopentecostal dominionists--enough that, in truth, she may be ultimately as much of a "dream candidate" for the dominionist movement as Mike Huckabee was. Even worse, she's running in a manner that has been frighteningly successful for dominionist groups since the early 80's--specifically, as a "stealth candidate".
