Sarah Palin is billed on the John McCain ticket as another maverick who will fight for truth, another outsider who will fight the establishment, another reformer who will fundamentally change government. But that Sarah Palin doesn't exist. She's an invention of the increasingly dishonest McCain campaign.

Refusing to answer questions is key to preserving that false image. This week, Gov. Palin's handlers pressed that tactic hard, announcing that she is "unlikely to cooperate" with the special prosecutor appointed by the Alaska Legislature to investigate her firing of a state administrator. It's stonewalling, plain and simple. The case could show conclusively that Gov. Palin is not the people's champion of small-town values but a vicious practitioner of small-time payback.
