'racial views steer some white dems away from obama' (AP)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks -- many calling them "lazy," "violent" or responsible for their own troubles.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 -- about two and one-half percentage points.'

this does not surprise me. there is a lot of deep seated racism in a lot of people, and i sort of figured that this election would probably unearth a great deal of it . I wish I had a specific demographic of the dems they polled, just to wrap my head around who still harbours this type of thinking.

1. the AP seems all too pleased to publish this shit
how about a focus on bigoted asshole freeper who would vote against Obama. How about calling them out on their standard racially-tinged responses?

3. maybe they take that as a given
i would have liked to think that racism didnt exist amongst dems, but i have met people who are DLC and wont SAY it but just say "theres something i dont like about obama"..whereas republicans just come right out and say it .
yes, i wish they would publish an in depth study on the republican need to marginalize people with blatant stereotypes.

15. I don't like the way the article downplayed Republican racism either...
Edited on Sat Sep-20-08 11:08 AM by MN Against Bush
Sure it may be true that most the Republicans would vote against Obama even if he were white, but that doesn't mean that the AP should keep the statistics on Republican racism from us. I would assume they asked Republicans the same questions on race, and rather than simply saying "lots" of Republicans harbor racist feelings and then moving back to focus on Democratic racism without giving the details on Republican racism does come off as very biased. Racism goes beyond one election, and I think the AP has an obligation to provide us with both sides.

At the same time however while I think this poll has been reported in a biased manner, I also think it is important that our media does talk about these issues. Too many people think racism has gone away, but it hasn't. There are tens of millions of racists in this country, and their attitudes need to be challenged. We can not challenge racism if we just ignore it.

2. I have a feeling we are going to see more and more of this
crap the closer we get to election day. AmeriKa is really in a mess right now and these freaks don't help things. We have to work that much harder to get informed voters to the polls on election day!

5. I am tired of thiscrap ~ there are millions that are voting
for him because he is not thesame.

Why are Democrats repeating this bullshit?

That is exactly what they want us to believe when they steal it.

If it is just about race why did Kerry not win, Gore?

The answer is they both lost because RpveCO stole the elctions.

Race is now the Mime that they are using to think it's all about RACE ----

6. You know, I believe a lot of Republicans
would say that if Obama weren't black they would seriously consider voting Democratic this year, but to see Democrats express this is just absolutely disappointing. I know that there are a lot of right-wing and "throw-back" Democrats in the south, but I had not thought the numbers would be that big. Thanks for the wake-up...

8. I sort of knew
when Obama won the nod, that the deep seated racism in some people who usually wont admit it, would show up. I have a family in Indiana that, when I was younger, always voted dem because of unions..then, they all started voting republican. (guns, abortion, you know the story). the older ones would come right out and use the n word or the word 'colored' without blinking an eye, which was right in ones face, so to speak. the younger ones would just say black people but as long as they werent too uppity they acknowledged their right to exist. needless to say, I dont involve myself much with any of them, I just find it odd that so many people are so ill informed. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to question ones own dna origins. every human being on earth came from the same 15 clan mothers in africa, we are all related via our mitochondrial dna. ergo, all of us come from ancestors in africa.
everyone of us.
google the human genome project.
I wish it wasnt so, but i knew this would happen.

Edited on Sat Sep-20-08 08:51 PM by Dhalgren
because of their racism and support for the US brand of fascism. Several posters on this site have said I shouldn't do that, but fascism breaks all bonds - period. I wish more people would feel that way...

9. I
would suspect that the majority are over 40. And of those over 40 I would wager that the 60+ group are some of the worse offenders. And of those I'll bet women are a majority of that group.

10. Ya know i've seen the opposite side of this as well.
My HR director at work who is a bit of a racist, and a former repuke County Commissioner is voting for Obama. He's actually seen the light, not to become a Democrat. However he has told me he can not vote for McCain because a vote for more of the same would be insane.

I even had one of our "white trashy" types tell me in a very matter of fact manner, he was voting for the "nigger".His exact quote was "i don't care what anybody thinks, i'm voting for the nigger. I almost fell out over that little diddy.

11. I thought that was a given?
it's the Bradley effect, and when you add in independent voters, it gets up above 5%.

It's why I've always assumed this race would be very, very close.

14. thanks for that
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradley_effect

i guess i knew about it but didnt know it had a name.

on the other hand, heres something i pondered.
what if colin powell were running ? would he be more palatable to the masses?
i also wondered, if it were condi rice instead of sarah palin, what would that have done?
I SWEAR , sometimes I think that voters only vote for the outcome that measures the need for their OWN EGOS to be fed.

as an example: many older white men like sarah palin..why? because when shes standing up there with mccain its a YOUNG WOMAN WITH AN OLDER MAN WHO IS IN CHARGE OF HER.
and that feeds their own egos.
obama stands with biden and its a young black man in charge of an older white man.
and that freaks some older white guys out .
it seems to be about their own egos.

17. My step-father-in-law is very racist, very republican, and registered democrat.
He lives for the phone call polling... loves to identify himself as a registered Dem, and say the most obnoxious things about the democratic candidates. And he is not alone in that.
