Everyday poor and middle class RW think |
|
---
My co-worker doesn't really pay too much attention to politics although he understands and realizes that the Democratic Party offers much more protection for everyday working men and women. His wife is another story. Hard right wing but faltering.
The way he describes it she likes some things about Obama but she has concerns that he would lead us into the dreaded "S" word (Socialism). WTF? But this is how everyday working RW'ers think I do believe.
I responded to him by pointing out that when corporate giants are bailed out by our tax dollars then is that not "Socialism"? Corporate welfare?
The RW seems to not bat an eye and find enough money for endless war, corporate bail outs, oil corporation subsidies, in other words "militarism" and "corporatism". But they cannot find it in their hearts to support a Government that would actually use our tax dollars to help us out with the basics such as health insurance, housing, energy, food, etc.. Nope, they call that "Socialism".
He also said she was of the mindset that someone "not working" would be getting "welfare" and how unfair that was. Wow...just wow.
I informed him that most "welfare" recipients were the elderly and single Moms. And that I would rather support a Government that errors on the side of the poor and middle class than what we have now which purposefully errors on the side of the uber-wealthy and corporate interests.

1. I was reading the freeper boards yesterday |

about the financial meltdown and I was really struck by how honestly they believe that we are doing this to them. They were all so concerned that we would somehow give these houses away and really screw them. It was bizarre.

They resign themselves to doing without necessities as long as they know nobody else can have them, either.
It's a spiteful mindset and nothing we say can change it.

I ask that question every time a puke uses the word. I've been doing this consistently for about ten years now and not once, NOT ONE TIME, has someone given me an answer. They either shut up and walk away or get really pissed and change the subject.

7. I understand your frustration. |

my mother is one, as is my biological family. they listen to sound bytes, talking points spewed at them. they dont delve into anything. for instance, your explanation of welfare. they have already had the meme thrown at them that the word 'welfare' applies only to poor black people. thats the only way they associate the word welfare with anything. ODDLY ENOUGH my sister had to use WIC and food stamps when her husband left her so I used her as an example to my mom to change her outlook on the subject. it didnt. she is still living in the mccarthy era and communists are under the bed. it is really just this awful ignorance that people have, and i cannot for the life of me figure out why people refuse to learn anything new. what fear keeps them from doing so? is there an illusion of safety from not learning anything new? I wish I knew the answers to that.
