NAPLES — Steve Hemping was more than mildly surprised to receive his Party Affiliation Voter Registration Card for the GOP two weeks ago. He’s the chairman of the Collier County Democratic Party.

Since then, he said he has heard more than 30 complaints from local registered Democrats who received the same letter, and the number is growing.

Ira Sharp, president of the Collier County Democratic Club, counts around 100 complaints here from Democrats who say they’ve received the letter, which asks them to confirm their registration as members of the Republican Party by mailing a preprinted card, in a postage-paid reply envelope, to the Republican National Committee.

It also asks for a donation to GOP candidate John McCain’s presidential campaign.

“I’ve had people wondering, do they have to pay to have their party affiliation changed. It’s a deliberate attempt to confuse people,” Sharp said.

Yet Hemping and Sharp also are worried about local Democrats who didn’t receive one of these letters. It has all the marks of a scheme to deny them the vote this Election Day, they say

1. So what is Hemping doing about it? If it's a PPD envelope, he
obviously has the ID of WHERE they're to be collected! I would THINK this is not only attempted voter fraud, but using the US Post Office to commit a felony! WORRIED???? What the hell kind of response is THAT? Kick ass and take names for god sake!

2. I haven't gotten anything in the mail
I voted in the non primary. I would "assume" that if you voted then, you would be eligible to vote in the general.

It would not surprise me if they decided I was ineligible to vote. I am a transplant from NY and a registered Democrat. When I voted in the primary the poll worker shouted out, "Lookie here. We got ourselves a Democrat".

Trust the voting here? Hell no. Pity since all I ever see are Obama stickers. As of today, I have yet to see one single McCain/Whatshername.
