Welcome to the final stages of the coup...

If you must break the law, do it to seize power: in all other cases observe it. ~ Julius Caesar

In 2000, the long fought for and long admired democracy of the United States of America began a slow and steady decline toward fascism - a Bush family tradition - with the installment of a president - a man the citizens overwhelmingly rejected (although the funny math told a still believed myth) - by a few corrupt judges on the US Supreme Court. That coup is now nearly complete and checkmate is all but unavoidable.

Let me first point you to the Bush administration's so-called Wall Street bailout bill, here, so that you can see for yourself that this treachery is being conducted in the light of day. Fascism is finally and formally out of the right-wing closet even if the F word is not yet openly being used (although it should be, and often).

Now, if you do not yet understand that the Wall Street crisis is a man-made disaster done through intentional deregulation and corruption, I have a bridge in Alaska to sell to you (or Sara Palin does anyway). This manufactured crisis is now to be remedied, if the fiscal fascists get their way, with the total transfer of Congressional powers (the few that still remain) to the Executive Branch and the total transfer of public funds into corporate (via government as intermediary) hands.

Adam Davidson of NPR blogs about the so-called bailout bill as follows:

I would guess that this has to be one of the biggest peacetime transfers of power from Congress to the Administration in history. (Anyone know?). Certainly one of the most concise.

The Treasury Secretary can buy broadly defined assets, on any terms he wants, he can hire anyone he wants to do it and can appoint private sector companies as financial deputies of the US government. And he can write whatever regulation he thinks are needed.

Most importantly, Davidson points to this passage in the bill:

Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency.

100. QUESTIONS
1. Why do I have to pay through tax dollars to ensure that your 401k doesn't take a BIG FALL? You want to GAMBLE you take the loss. I don't help GAMBLERS who loose their money!

2. Look if this is truly about Businesses and Future Homeowners being able to get loans then Start a new agency that will loan the money to those who need it if they qualify instead of giving it to Businesses that have managed poorly. Since we now own Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac why not make Fannie Mae for homes and Freddie Mac for businesses and those two use the TRILLION DOLLARS for loans. No BAILOUTS for Businesses. Loans Yes Bailouts NO if they qualify!!!!!!!. BAILOUT HOMEOWNERS that need the help if they qualify ONLY. You got to think faster than these crooks people!!!!

108. Do Democrats really get it?
I would like to point out first, that the Republican Mantra has always been privatizing social security. Investing in the Stock Market is a Gamble, always has been, and some people lost everything in 1929. This is why I never invest in the Stock Market and why I have opposed privatizing Social Security. What is happening right now, is their plans have failed miserably. They are scrambling to get money to help keep it propped up so it doesn't fall. Another Mantra they have is Ownership Society, which is another way of saying your on your own. They don't like Social Security and Welfare becuase it helps people not Corporations. If your a Democrat that has invested in the Stock Market you should be ashamed of yourself. I know a lot of you have. You have been proping up the only thing that backs all their Mantras. Without it they have nothing. I for one, aggresively oppose helping out the Stock Market. I don't have any pity what so ever for Gamblers. You loose your money too bad. I however, do have pity for Corporations that I am working for, provided that they have listened to at least some of my suggestions. If they have not listened at all, well, then why should I have pitty for them? I have worked for many Companies that I warned them about what they were doing. They are no longer in business. Same goes for any neighbor that doesn't seem to get it. If it's a neighbor that him or his wife has gone through some medical problems or have lost a job but are aggresively looking for another and have taken that minimun wage job while looking for something better then YES I do have pity for them and would like to help. That is Democrat!

how we got into this mess.

114. Money is just paper.
There is no value to money. It is just a tool that replaced the bartering system. We give it value. They print money. It takes ink and paper. So just what is your point. They have printed money and will continue to print money. The point is, not to help the Corporations unless they Qualify and to do that you must have them meet certain requirements. If they don't meet those requirements let them fall. First things first, Large CEO and White Collar payrolls need to go for Corporations requesting loans. If you can print the money for bailing out Corporations then print the money first to bail out the homeowners who qualify. Have you forgotten that this is TAX PAYER Money that comes from the Fed or the Treasury. That this country is suppose to be run by it's CITIZENS not Corporations. If not you are on the wrong forum board and website.

71. This proposal consolidates control of the economy under Bush.
There is no court review. The administration can violate any law or regulation it wants. Congress only gets to review the actions of the administration at certain intervals and via a report.

This is a coup. This bill has nothing to do with resolving the economic problems. It is a coup. We have to get everyone to contact their Congressman.

Republicans should also oppose this. This virtually abolishes the right to private property.

Think about it. The government is given the authority to do whatever it wants with the foreclosed properties. If it sells them for pennies on the dollar, it puts more downward pressure on the value of the remaining properties not in foreclosure. Once your property is valued at less than the amount you owe on your mortgage, your bank can (under some mortgages) place you in default even if you haven't missed mortgage payments. That could happen really fast if the government starts selling properties really cheap to the very wealthy.

Also, this proposal affects the Contracts clause in the Constitution, pretty much does away with the separation of powers with regard to spending any money that would be taken in by the Treasury through sale of properties. It deprives you of the right to question a government foreclosure of your property in court.

If you think about how money is leveraged in the economy, then this proposal would give the government near total power over the economy. This is unacceptable. This is a coup. Call your Congressman and don't stop. Stay home from work and call and call and call. Don't let them have any peace. This is especially true if you have a Blue Dog or Republican congressman. This is not just in violation of liberal ideals. It should anger conservatives even more than it does us. This goes much, much too far.

will smell trouble for his future and that is the only way to get people like him to not totally and completely screw you over. He has to feel pressure that his job is on the line. If you don't speak up that will never happen.

24. A certain well known fascist commented on the governmental manipulation of it's people some 60 years
ago -

"Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

is that Goering said that some sixty-odd years ago and still, even after the horrors of WWII, America doesn't get it even today. In fact we're walking, or we have walked, right into it! People are just stupid. They're just stupid. Sometimes it is said that people are cattle, but I think that insults cattle. Even a cow has enough sense to walk away from an obviously bad situation.

I've tried to fool myself about it. I've tried to convince myself that Americans can't be as stupid as what we see at FR.

But these past couple of weeks I've learned the truth. Neighbor, internet friend...never suspected either. IGNORANT. Obama is a Muslim. McCain yard sign. I think I've disabused the first of all the lies her RW "friends" have filled her head with about Obama; she still admits to not knowing who to vote for. Her head is spinning. She can't believe she's been lied to all this time. She's where I was three years ago...The world has tilted.

The yard sign neighbors -- I no longer speak to them. Even though they're otherwise a very nice elderly couple. They're deaf in the most cruel sense: they don't listen to dissonant voices.

And through all this I know in my heart there are LOTS more like them out there. Totally brainwashed. Happily going to the slaughter.

I have no trouble whatsoever understanding how Hitler rose to power.

15. "We have but two options."
Welcome to the final stages of the coup..., by Larisa Alexandrovna via HuffingtonPost

September 20, 2008 | 08:11 PM (EST)

.....

The Bush family, in the form of Prescott Bush, has tried a more aggressive coup before in order to install fascism in this country. This treasonous plot was called "the Business Plot," because the high-level plotters - including Prescott Bush - were Wall Street men who openly supported fascism.

It seems this time around, the Bush family is trying the more subtle approach to open bloodshed: first create a crisis, then under the guise of addressing that crisis, overthrow democracy. Yes, it does sound terribly conspiracy-theory-esque when explained just this way. But what else does one call a criminal conspiracy to destroy Congressional powers permanently, alter Judicial powers permanently, and steal public funds?

As I see it now, we have but two options and I have long alluded to hoping against hope that one of these options would not be the only one left to a peaceful people. The first and frankly most preferable option is for Congress to immediately begin impeachment proceedings against the members of this latest Business Plot.

No time needs to be wasted on hearings as we already now have in writing, formally as presented to Congress, the intentions of this administration to nullify Congressional powers permanently, to alter Judicial powers permanently, and to openly steal public funds using as blackmail the total collapse of the US economy if these powers are not handed over. You do see how this is blackmail, do you not? You do see how this is a manufactured crisis precisely designed to be used as blackmail, do you not?

The other option, the one I have long prayed we would never need to even consider, is a total revolution. But, If Congress won't act in its own self-defense, in the defense of democracy, in defense of us - the people who have elected them to protect us from this very danger - then what is left for us to do? I don't want to see it come down to this, but I fear that it will. Put your party politics aside right now. We are in a crisis so dangerous that should these people succeed in their coup, your party affiliation will no longer matter, your American flag will be a nice collectible item of something that once was, and your version of God will be worshiped in secrecy because your freedoms will be owned by the few.

You are no longer Republicans, Democrats, or any shade of voter. You do not live in a swing state or a solid colored state. You are simply this: an American. That is the only side that matters. So call your members of Congress and demand, no, declare that unless they do their duty to the Constitution and to us, we will move to the streets - not because we want to, but because our founding fathers demanded this duty of each and every citizen in the face of such a domestic enemy. Demand - as is your right - that this bill be voted against and demand - as is your right - that the people plotting this treachery be held to account. We are either a nation of laws or we are no longer a democracy. Pick a side, because there won't be another time, another moment, another chance to be a patriot.

96. HARPERS: 1934: The Plot Against America + BBC: The Whitehouse Coup-GREAT BACKGROUND!
1934: The Plot Against America

DEPARTMENTNo CommentBYScott HortonPUBLISHEDJuly 28, 2007

I’m back from the land of heather and thistles, not to mention wee drams and lukewarm ale, but on my way out a friend at the BBC alerted me to this, a not-to-miss program on the BBC this morning, accessible over the next several days by internet. It’s the story of the Plot Against America. I don’t mean the Philip Roth novel, nor even the Sinclair Lewis book, It Can’t Happen Here, but rather the historical events upon which these two works of fiction were based.

In November 1934, federal investigators uncovered an amazing plot involving some two dozen senior businessmen, a good many of them Wall Street financiers, to topple the government of the United States and install a fascist dictatorship. Roth’s novel is developed from several strands of this factual account; he assumed the plot is actually carried out, whereas in fact an alert FDR shut it down but stopped short of retaliatory measures against the plotters. A key element of the plot involved a retired prominent general who was to have raised a private army of 500,000 men from unemployed veterans and who blew the whistle when he learned more of what the plot entailed. The plot was heavily funded and well developed and had strong links with fascist forces abroad. A story in the New York Times and several other newspapers reported on it, and a special Congressional committee was created to conduct an investigation. The records of this committee were scrubbed and sealed away in the National Archives, where they have only recently been made available.

The Congressional committee kept the names of many of the participants under wraps and no criminal action was ever brought against them. But a few names have leaked out. And one is Prescott Bush, the grandfather of the incumbent president. Prescott Bush was of course deep into the business of the Hamburg-America Lines, and had tight relations throughout this period with the new Government that had come to power in Germany a year earlier under Chancellor Aldoph Hitler. It appears that Bush was to have formed a key liaison for the group with the new German government.

Prescott Bush, of course, went on to service as a U.S. Senator from Connecticut, and his son, George H.W. Bush emerged from World War II as a hero.

The Whitehouse Coup
Monday 23 July 2007

The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell Hse & George Bush’s Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression.

Mike Thomson investigates why so little is known about this biggest ever peacetime threat to American democracy.

101. Most are unaware of Prescott Bush's attempted right-wing coup of FDR in 1933
Edited on Sun Sep-21-08 11:45 AM by seafan
BBC program that reveals the attempted right-wing coup in USA in 1933 is a MUST LISTEN:

Thanks for putting that info in this thread, mod mom. I hope everyone listens to this BBC report at this link. (29 minutes)

I posted this comment in the above thread, still very relevant to this bailout that Bush, Inc. are forcing on us:

If the American people learned of this event in our history, it would finally expose and blow the doors off the origin of the corporatist thievery and war profiteering led by descendants and associates of Prescott Bush, leading directly to the political and socioeconomic strangulation of our country's foundation today. People know now that *something* is horribly wrong in our country.

A listen to this program will open their eyes like no other.

And the answer would become clear, that we must completely repudiate the corporations' control over the infrastructure of our government and its ruthless, war-mongering control over our foreign policy.

EVeryone, please listen to this BBC report. It arms us with the knowledge that this right wing attempted coup of our government has happened before. And the Bush family was in on it, in 1933.

16. Consider the timing.
A 28-year Republican (and DINO) deregulatory plot that started with Reagan, continued to a somewhat lesser degree through Bill Clinton's DLC terms, and finally ends with voters waking up to "CHANGE" and "HOPE" and "BOTTOM-UP ECONOMICS." But four more months of Bush is just long enough to convince the public that action cannot wait for the next administration (and thus the terms must be set NOW) yet short enough that it can be pushed through fast without adequate debate or accountability down the road.

Fishy at best.

If some emergency measures are absolutely necessary to get through the next four months then they should be kept to a minimum. Comprehensive reform should be left to the next administration and Congress.

The 'horrific scenario' of the 2nd American Revolution after a third stolen 'election?'

08 Sep 2008 The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle. Now they’re training for the same mission -- with a twist -- at home. Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or manBushmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks. This new mission marks the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to NorthCom. They may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack.

THIS is very serious. I have posted about this in 2 other threads (see my journal for details) and cannot stress this enough. This is disaster capitalism and shock doctrine in action!:nuke:

33. No way. 7 years left. Here's why
(1) The BIG economic timebomb is the derivatives market, estimated to be at least $596 TRILLION and bigger than all of the world's economies combined http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derivative_(finance)#cite_note-afgh-0 ... see also http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2817995.stm>.

When the derivatives market collapses -- during the Obama Presidency -- Neocons will blame Obama. This is all engineered. If you don't believe this economic crisis has been engineered, then read Vanity Fair's article here: http://ftrsupplemental.blogspot.com/2008/08/bringing-down-bear-stearns.html

(2) With the trump card of scapegoating Obama, which will destroy his Presidency, there are two Democratic saviours remaining who can ride to the rescue: (a) the Clintons, and (b) Al Gore. Al Gore is a coward who will never run again, and Hillary Clinton will be the perfect Patsy President (remember: the Neocons wanted HER as the 2008 Democratic Nominee) which the Neocons will use to justify demanding a "military takeover" of government.

Look for April 2015 as the target date for a GOP walkout on "illegitimate" President Clinton, setting the stage for a plane crashing into the Capitol Dome with only Democrats inside, and then President Palin (Hillary's 2012 opponent) taking the reins in a Potemkin rescue during the "terrorist act."

Which brings us to the trillion dollar question: why? Unless they know that 1) they have the election in the bag for McBush, or 2) they have no intention of an election taking place, or 3) they somehow expect Obama to continue exercising their fascistic plan, why would they risk such a power transfer?

As more than believable #1 is, even to be expected, somehow I feel #2 is also under consideration. October (or September) surprise, anyone?

now I am really scared.

:scared:

<snip>

Pick a side, because there won't be another time, another moment, another chance to be a patriot.

my 2 senators and my rep via email. Don't know what else to do at 11:30 Saturday night.

I kept it short & sweet:

We are at a dangerous crossroads.

Please uphold your duty to the Constitution of the United States and oppose the treasury's proposed "Bailout Bill".

"Sec. 8. Review. Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency."

The entire bill as proposed is wholly unacceptable, and the mere suggestion that we accept this resolution is treasonous.

I am a Constitution Voter, and this desperate grab at further executive power by this administration cannot be tolerated.

My letter to Sen. Voinovich and Sen. Brown tonight.

Folks quit posting on Du and start emailing congress now. Two days left of a democracy. If this passes welcome to fascist America.

Senator Brown,

Please allow me to express my worries about the new financial bail out bill being proposed by the Bush administration. Sec. Paulson has clauses in the bill that essentially give him the right to do whatever he sees fit with no Congressional nor judicial oversight. That is Fascism. You cannot allow this bill to pass as is. I believe markets should correct themselves to a certain degree. The deregulation of banks and financial institutions has created this mess in the first place. By passing this bill as is would be extremely disappointing.

Cordially,

XXX

Congress isn't a court of law or administrative agency.

I don't like this bailout either but the above language doesn't usurp Congressional powers.

Congress should be especially watchful of the jackals and prevent draconian language like the above from being inserted in the final bill. Let Paulson stop the bleeding and let's get through the election.

President Obama and his administration can craft the real deal after he and his cabinet have had time to determine the best course of action.

The whole thing stinks to high heaven... Hello, mainstreet supports wallstreet... If people could pay their mortgage, these businesses would still be making money over fist.... Mainstreet makes Wallstreet. There is NO WAY that this prop up is going to work... AND if the US is assuming the bad paper, well then damn-it, take the fucking houses and put the homeless people's in them. Tent-Cities are popping up all over this nation because they have nothing... ... We'll ask you what you did with it at the end of that, but since you were bound to lose your job then with the change of presidency, it won't matter if we don't like what you did - we'll just decide to not do it again. No-one will be able to challenge what you did as illegal."

Is Hank Paulson going to be the richest man in the world?

What would you do with $700 billion? $100 to every person in the world? $7,000 to every household in the US?

79. I don't think so.
"The other option, the one I have long prayed we would never need to even consider, is a total revolution".

We don't need to spend any time contemplating this option as the American people clearly have no stomach for it. They have been way to subdued and placated and made dependent on support systems to engage in revolutionary activity which would require knowing how to survive in a hostile environment. A skill that Americans use to possess but has been forgotten long ago.

And even if the above were not true we have clearly already passed the point of no return as such resistance would have had to begun at least a couple of years back. No, the truth is that Americans bought the story hook, line, and sinker to such that the best one can hope for is to be among the survivors of the forthcoming catastrophic events which I am not at all sure that surviving such events will really be all that desirable.

97. "a total revolution" what in america? that a joke right?
Sad but true. There will be no revolution in America,. that time is way long gone. When the people let 9/11 go by and just went along with the preposterous story perpetrated by the creators if that terrorist event (PNAC as advertised in there own mission statement!),. it was over. Now the people have shown that their perceived personal comfort is more important to them than justice and peace. So they will do nothing while the last vestiges of democracy are chopped out from under us,. while the elite take what they have long claimed was theirs by rights,. the ownership and control of the rest of us! Welcome to your fascist enslavement.

This rapid confounding of american democracy has got me wishing I was not an atheist and could just hope for the return of jesus to send me to heaven, like so many of these go-along sheepl,. oh, when will the invisible-man-in-the-sky intervene and save us from this pain? yeah right! these fascists have used religion as it has always been used to keep people placated and down! Why do so many people believe in faerie-tails, instead of facing reality and doing something about it,. to shape it? Well that is not going to happen,. sad but true. a whole nation too scared to face reality. fear itself?

81. The section about non-reviewability is standard, boiler-plate agency language
Edited on Sun Sep-21-08 07:55 AM by leveymg
All actions of the Treasury remain subject to Congressional oversight (cough, for what that's worth, these days), as well as court challenge under the Administrative Procedures Act (clears throat, APA review imposes a high, but not impossible, standard on potential litigants.)

But, don't get too worked up by this language. It's normal for an announcement of this type of agency action. What is extraordinary is the action, itself -- looked at another way, the US Gov't just took over the mortgage and investment banking industries in the United States, along with all their debts. Congress can now do what it wants with all those debts, including forgiving some or all of them.

From Politico

Exclusive: Foreign banks may get help

Sun Sep 21, 8:24 AM ET

In a change from the original proposal sent to Capitol Hill, foreign-based banks with big U.S. operations could qualify for the Treasury Department’s mortgage bailout, according to the fine print of an administration statement Saturday night.

The theory, according to a participant in the negotiations, is that if the goal is to solve a liquidity crisis, it makes no sense to exclude banks that do a lot of lending in the United States.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson confirmed the change on ABC's "This Week," telling George Stephanopoulos that coverage of foreign-based banks is "a distinction without a difference to the American people."

"If a financial institution has business operations in the United States, hires people in the United States, if they are clogged with illiquid assets, they have the same impact on the American people as any other institution," Paulson said.

When I said "it helps the dollar and the economy and the Constitution," I meant our OPPOSITION to the bailout helps the dollar, the economy & the Constitution. I did NOT mean the bailout helps the dollar, economy & constitution.

I oppose the bailout. I was suggesting this as a "framing" to explain why Democrats oppose the bailout, even though, if the Democrats delay the bailout, it will cause the market to drop. The dollar, the economy, and the Constitution are more important than Wall Street.

Fuck the rich. Yeah. Or, as we say in political code: return the level of income inequality back to where it was before Reagan took office.

127. It's not the end
As a few others have pointed out, I don't think there will be revolution in the USA right now, or anytime soon.

Most Americans, indeed most people in the world who have a standard of living any where close to what 70%-80% of Americans have, just want the damn government to keep the economy and their economic way of life going. Period. They'll accept occasional recessions. They'll accept being layed off for months. They'll accept having their homes foreclosed on (as long as they have the money to rent). They'll certainly accept many government intrusions on privacy to keep the economy going. They don't know or care about details of the constitution. They want order and reasonable prosperity. They want to know they and their kids will be safe from crime. I do to.

I don't think they're all stupid, ignorant (well maybe a bit), or evil. They're just human, and I think almost any group of humans in their situation would do the same.

I think one of two things is required for a revolution. One, of course, would be a total failure of the economy for more than 50% of the people - like Germany in the 20s. Much worse than the depression in the U.S. in the 30's. The second would be massive disapperances, jailings, and camps. Massive - affecting a large % of the population - not just "radicals".

Given this, I just have to observe that things were better under Clinton, and will be better under Obama. Not perfect. Maybe not even great. But progressive means making things better.

I could be wrong. Unbelievably, it's quite possible this time that condition one above might occur. But I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Revolution, like any massive, fast change hurts huge numbers of people. Look at history. This is just a fact.

Write your congressman. Protest the bailout plan. Work for Obama. Good luck to all of us.

130. E-mailing & phone callls are a waste of time.
They will be ignored. A hand written letter is more effective.

132. They take a *long* time to get there, thought, what with the security procedures.
This was good advice back before anthrax. I'd say call and keep calling.

139. Higher Authority
We have inalienable rights. They can't take our freedom, dignity, thoughts and ideals unless we give it away. Sometimes, this fight requires blood.

Feeling ya.

142. It's the last big Bush scam: Get America to bail out the big companies that are his BASE.
Let them fail! They earned it.

The good companies will go on and the bad ones will go under.
