When George H.W. Bush spoke those words during his 1992 Presidential bid, America shuddered. And rightly so. Ridiculous visions of UN soldiers in "blue helmets" patrolling American streets were shoved into the public consciousness by a complicit media intent on explaining away the worst of our fears.
I don't believe those words, spoken with earnest intensity by the senior Bush, were merely political speech.
They were prophecy - of a sort - the sort you use when you're already making plans for that eventuality.
Consequently, I am compelled to tell you my own prophecy, based on what has occurred, and what yet remains.
There will be NO election in November. Instead, there will be a new world order.
1- Once Bush and his enablers in Congress will finish the coup they started 8 years ago by transferring what remains of our public funds into the hands of the private sector.
2- Bush will stage a national emergency, ala the
Reichstag fire, probably a bogus terrorist attack.
3- Bush will assume the far-reaching emergency powers Congress granted him and will use them to "postpone" the November election.
4- When unrest begins to build, Bush will declare martial law, and will employ the hundreds of thousands of mercenaries at his beck and call via Blackwater, CACI, etc., to enforce it.
5- It will all be claimed to be a "temporary suspension of the Constitution," but that will be, as they say, that, for our Constitution, and our country.
6- Bush will instigate a new round of ruinous wars designed to keep the emergency going and keep his regime in power.
And where it all goes from there, I can't even guess, but it's going to be Orwellian, that much is certain. I sure hope it doesn't happen this way, but as of now, I don't see any way out of it - maybe you do, and if so, I'd love to hear it. Flame me if you must, for calling it like I fear it, but that won't change the facts on the ground which led me to these conclusions.
For those of you who think I am crazy, or paranoid, or just plain (or is it palin?) stupid, who believe what I've described just cannot happen in America - I hear you. I really do. And I wish it wasn't possible, too.
But it is.
Anyone who has been paying attention for the last twenty years of Republican domination has seen innumerable impossibilities come to pass in our once just land - torture, impeachment for blowjobs but not war crimes, and let's not forget those war crimes, or the illegal invasion of a sovereign nation which posed no threat to us, the drowning and loss of an American city, $4.00 + a gallon gas, our military crippled, our infrastructure crumbling, etc.
None of us thought any of this was possible in America, eight years ago...
