an official said. “There was no hesitation.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/21/business/21paulson.html
On Thursday afternoon, the two men, along with Christopher Cox, the S.E.C. chairman, went to the White House to explain their plan. “The president said, ‘Let’s do it,’ ” an official said. “There was no hesitation.”

All too familiar.

1. Someone expected him to think about it?
That would be funny if it weren't so bloody tragic.

3. Here we go again
Fabricate some hysteria. Lie and make people believe something needs to be done IMMEDIATELY!

Whip out the plan you've had up your sleeve for years, waiting for this day.

Get it passed in the heat of the hysteria.

Don't let anyone examine your plan or question it or suggest that there should be some kind of checks and balances in your plan, some kind of overview.

Claim that anyone resisting this bailout has Weapons Of Mass Destruction.

8. There Was No Hysteria This Time
The financial industry was right on the verge of a entire string of failures. We came very close to a depression. I had been an optimist up to a week ago, but the last seven days have been very scary.

You didn't need to listen to anything the Bush adminstration said to realize that, just paying attention to the financial community and the actions of businesses was enough. There was blood on the streets this week.

I supposed the reason Bush said he didn't hesitate was that he had already met with Paulsen, who convinced him a bailout was necessary. I'm actually glad Bush didn't try to monkey with it.

13. Are you kidding me?
Did you read the accounts of the meeting with Congressional leaders? It was a replay of the 9/11 nonsense that produced the Iraq invasion.

We're already in a depression, and anyone who thinks otherwise is overlooking the obvious. Nothing has been averted. If you think the last 7 days have been scary, you haven't been paying attention for the last couple of years.

The reason Bush didn't hesitate is because he had already been told what to do. Bush doesn't need to "monkey" with anything; that had been done long in advance of this latest "disaster."

Our MBA President is presiding over this latest crushing of the common people. He must be so proud.

18. There are Some Stock Advisors
who are constantly optimistic on the market and encouraging people to buy stocks. They are known as perma-bulls. There are also perma-bears, who are pessimistic and warn about the dangers of a collapse in stocks. Both are worth reading; neither are trustworthy as a guide to the future.

DU is a perma-bear community. Reading the economic forum at DU over the last seven years, you would think the US started out in a deep recession and has gotten worse every year since then.

Having that mindset can blind one to the magnitude of real individual crises. The failures in finance and insurance that came to a head a week ago is the only event in my lifetime that threatened to bankrupt most of the financial sector, dry up credit, and send the world economy into a deep depression. It was not more of the same. It was a black swan moment, and required a massive and immediate response to ward off disaster. I can't think of a leading figure in finance, economics, or politics who feels the country would have come through unscathed without federal intervention of some kind.

This is a matter of personal judgment, but in no way do I see the economic warnings this month in any way similar to the panic-mongering after 9-11. But we'll see. You have predicted that nothing has been averted and that things will continue to deteriorate. We will see.

19. There's a difference today
I am heartened at the uproar this bailout plan has created. People are outraged at this idea, quite rightly so, and are making their objections known. Lawmakers are voicing reservations about it, and dear President Bush continues to claim that this rescue has to be done quickly.

Quickly.

Not this time, I hope. The White House's history of capitalizing on tragedy has, I hope, come to an end. The people are speaking in loud voices, and maybe this will make a difference. Paulson's refusal to reconsider the monies to be paid to executives tells you what a shoddy, unrelenting piece of work this proposed legislation is, and the idea of no review, no oversight - just like the Patriot Act - is a nightmare.

So, for now at least, there is a chance that the people will make a difference. I, personally, am not optimistic, since this regime has a history of ignoring the wishes of the people, but I'll be very happy to be wrong. If I'm not, yes, our condition will worsen and people will suffer even more.

9. Bush is clearly phoning it in at this point
There was no hesitation because he doesn't care - he will be gone soon. Like he gives a shit about hurricanes, either natural or financial. He is clearly bored with the act and can't wait to head to his mansion.

He gives a shit about his legacy that has been so far down the toilet for years it could never be abridged or rewritten that anyone would care. I'd say he is evil incarnate, but Cheney's already taken that title.
