Lost cat returned home after nine years

Reuters) ^ | Wed Sep 10, 10:48 AM ET | Anna Legge
LONDON (Reuters) - A couple have been reunited with their missing cat after nine years, the RSPCA said on Wednesday. Dixie, a 15-year-old ginger cat, disappeared in 1999 and her owners thought she had been killed by a car. She was found less than half a mile from her home in Birmingham after a concerned resident rang the animal charity to report a thin and dishevelled cat who had been in the area for a couple of months. RSPCA Animal Collection Officer Alan Pittaway checked her microchip and confirmed it was Dixie. She was returned to her owners, Alan and...

LANCASTER - For the men and women flown in to the Antelope Valley to accept a little marble-and-brass immortality on the Lancaster Aerospace Walk of Honor, flying is all it was ever about. Each of those attending Saturday's ceremonies expressed love for the bright sunshine and clear blue skies over Edwards Air Force Base. Each knew the joy of the high-flying exploits best described in Tom Wolfe's classic of narrative journalism, "The Right Stuff," which celebrated the calculated cool, courage and humor of test pilots and astronauts. Ask retired Col. Joe Schiele. He piloted the C-141 Starlifter jet transport on...

MySpace bragging brings $320,000 tax bill to former, current UCO students (Tax Commission Gone Wild)
Sunday, September 21, 2008 1:51:22 PM · by OKIEDOC · 15 replies
NEWS OKLAHOMA ^ | September 21, 2008 | Randy Ellis
A youthful attempt to party their way to popularity and some exaggerated MySpace boasting have turned into a $320,000 tax nightmare for five current and former University of Central Oklahoma students. “This is crazy,” said Julius Baroi, co-founder of Kegheadz, a loosely organized Edmond-based party business. “The Tax Commission claims we owe more than $300,000. We don't have enough money between us to pay $6,000 to hire an attorney. They won't listen to us.” Paula Ross, spokesperson for the Oklahoma Tax Commission, said she couldn't comment on an individual taxpayer's case. Although the Tax Commission wants to tax Kegheadz like...

As the enemies of capitalism declare the death of the greatest and most productive form of organisation that humanity has ever achieved, it seems appropriate to quote what Warren Buffet, the greatest capitalist of our age, warned about mortgage derivatives in his annual Berkshire Hathaway letter of 2002: ... derivatives severely curtail the ability of regulators to curb leverage and generally get their arms around the risk profiles of banks, insurers and other financial institutions. Similarly, even experienced investors and analysts encounter major problems in analyzing the financial condition of firms that are heavily involved with derivatives contracts. When Charlie...

CNN Airport Monopoly

ME ^ | Sept 21,2008 | Neoliberalnot
I am going to keep this short and to the point. I do a fair bit of air travel and have for the last decade or more pondered why CNN is the only station ever available in every airport in the US. Does anyone else ever question this media monopoly which is able to capture the attention of every air traveler in the country? I don't get it. Why does CNN have this exclusive monopoly in public airports? They have the lock on the attention of the millions of air travelers that move throughout the country. Why is CNN allowed...

How McCain Makes Obama Conservative (More Biased?)
Sunday, September 21, 2008 10:49:07 AM · by Patriotic Progeny · 14 replies
Time Magizine ^ | Sept. 15, 2008 | Joe Klein
Both the major-party candidates for President have now made their first major decision — on a running mate — and I can't remember a year when the selections were more revealing about the character of the candidates. What we have is a choice between a conservative and a radical. The conservative is Barack Obama. He is a careful man, perhaps to a fault. His vice-presidential selection process was quiet, orderly and comprehensive. The selection of Joe Biden was no great surprise — he added experience to the ticket, a reliable loyalist and gleeful attack dog, a working-class Roman Catholic with...

Oh - those Islamophobes are just trying to give Arabs a bad name, by reporting the truth. BTW, next week airs the show with Bordain in Egypt. Looking forward to count Coptic Christian Egyptians telling us how wonderfully tolerant that place is.

Gain Detergent Ad Crosses Line?

Gain detergent decided that it would launch a "Hip/Funky" ad campaign. The first commercial featured a couple where the Pregnant mother was addicted to huffing Gain detergent. It showed a couple coming back from a false alarm at the maternity ward and the husband explaining that ever since his wife was pregnant, she was hooked on smelling detergent. The actress portraying the preggo was huffing Gain detergent like someone inhaling Model Glue. This ad was very sickening, and I've only seen it once, thank God.

Looks like "dog stung by bees is the hot topic with the Republican apologists this PM. Nothing about Obama willing to throw a monkey wrench in the Republican B&E. Can we finally dispense with any pretext for principles there? IOKIYAR.

damn tax and spend liberals....

Hey we FOUND Reagan's mythical welfare queen, she does have a limo and is on Wall Street!

He looked at me with that look of horror... realizing what I said

But, welfare....

DON"T lecture me on it... what do you THINK is going on in Wall Street RIGHT NOW? And if you think Commissar Paulston (thanks krugman for that one) is stopping on this CORPORATE Welfare, you are dreaming... so don't lecture me about socialism.. when COMMISSAR Paulson is doing this.

If he had a tail, he tucked it into his legs...

2. Denial.
Add to that the fact that they cannot get their pointed little heads around the fact that it is over for their fraudulent little political philosophy. It has been laid bare for the morally, ethically and philosophically bankrupt Frankenstein's Monster that it is. All they are left with is feeble attempts to blame this on Dems, Obama, people who have heard Obama's name mentioned in passing, Obama's pets(if any) and anything else, other than repukes.

Perhaps the pain and shame of it all will drive some of them to dire acts. Oh well.

Here's one from one of the deniers, in the Easton PA Express-Times.

It's easy to blame the collapse of the two largest mortgage lending giants, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, on the consumer for chasing the American Dream and taking on more house than they could afford.

The Treasury Department has demanded the CEOs step down. Certainly those at the wheel bear some responsibility. But the pillaging was already in their rear-view mirrors! Three of the main characters in this fiasco have strong ties to Barack Obama's campaign.

As Fannie Mae's CEO (1999-2003), Franklin Raines pulled in more than $90 million, mostly bonuses. He was sued by the SEC and OFHEO to recover $50 million in bonuses due to Enron-like accounting practices overstating their earnings by $10.6 billion. Raines took "early retirement," paid a hefty fine and forfeited stock options valued at $15.6 million. He is now Obama's economic adviser for housing policy.

Jamie Gorelick was vice chairwoman at Fannie. In 1998 she received a bonus of $779,625 amid a scandal in which signatures were falsified on accounting transactions to meet earning targets. She is a leading candidate for attorney general if Obama is elected.

Jim Johnson was Raines' predecessor at Fannie. He resigned from Obama's VP selection committee after revelations he accepted a sweetheart loan from Countrywide Financial while Fannie's CEO.

As taxpayers we are now liable for failures in a $5.2 trillion loan portfolio to include $780 billion in high-risk "Alt-A" and subprime loans. These are friends of Barack we can ill afford!

Steve Mason

My guess is that Steve snaps out badly, before long.

4. In those threads, not many are discussing the root cause.
No one is bl;aming deregulation, Phil Gramm, or any Republican for this fiasco. They're forgetting the past 8 years and reaching back to Clinton times. They aren't conservative, they are Republican apologists.

THAT'S the issue. They hate the idea as much as we do.

It's gotta be a pretty bad idea for DU and FR to agree it's bad.
