Evidently not much difference from 50 years ago... from my grandfather's 'joke file'
I thought you all might appreciate this. I'm going through my parents' house, and that includes some things that were my grandparents' as well. So I found this in a folder of my grandather's jokes. I've always thought Eisenhower was FAR better than Repubs today, and without knowing more details I think he had to have been - after all, he spoke against the military-industrial complex, and as I put it, Bush/Cheney ARE the f-ing military-industrial complex. A lot of this fits the Reagan-Bush years as well.

In any case, here are the jokes, and I think I can safely guess what party my grandfather (a WWI vet) voted for. :^)

"A Republican's Prayer"

Our Father which art in Washington,
Eisenhower be thy name,
when your turn begun,
Our jobs were done,
At Hudson Motors -- as at Willowrun.
Give us this day, our starvation pay,
And forgive us for taking it,
As we forgive those who take it from us.
And lead us not into Democratic Prosperity.
For thine is the Country and GM the Power and Profits Forever ---
Amen.

Ike is my shepard, I am in want
He maketh me lie down on park benches.
He leadeth me beside still factories
he restoreth my doubts in Republican Party
He guideth me in paths of Unemployment
For his Party's sake.

Yea, tho I walk through the Valley
of soup kitchens, I am hungry.
I do fear eveil, for thou art against me
Thou anoinst my income with taxes
So my expenses over runneth my income.

Surely poverty and hard living
shall follow me all the days of
the Republican Administration.
And I shall live in rented houses forever.
Amen.

5,000 years ago, Moses said, "Pick up your shovel, Mount your camel,
load your ass, and I will lead you to the promised land."

5,000 years later, F.D. Roosevelt said, "Boys, lay down your shovel,
light your Camel, and sit on your ass; this is the promised land."

Now Boys, be careful. Eisenhower will take your shovel, sell your
camel, kick your ass, and tell you there is no promised land.

2. My parents were Republican, but it isn't the same party they believed in.
All jokes aside, they would be mortified to learn how corrupt this party is since the BFEE took the reins. Granted, both parties has corruption and both parties lie or stretch the truth to a point, but these Repugs are in-your-face with their lies.

3. You're exactly right. My ex and I used to say that about her parents, who automatically
voted Republican, because they always had, but they had no idea - and wouldn't have believed it - how bad they've been since Reagan got in. What's the BFEE? (I have way too much on my mind these days to figure out the constant barrage of acronyms).

5. eisenhower gets way too much credit for speaking out against the military-industrial complex
he coined the term in his farewell address. he was president for eight years and didn't do crap about it. arguably, he supervised its rise.

7. Eisenhower was warning us against Nixon.
We rejected Nixon, and Kennedy was killed.

Johnson wouldn't run against Nixon, the war escalated. Robert Kennedy and Dr. King were killed.

Nixon got caught in Watergate and resigned in disgrace. Ford pardoned him.

The rest of that century is history.

Ike warned us against the neocon cabal that was paracitizing the GOP; the coup that stole our country. Ike was a republican that saw what was about to happen to his party and his country.

Unfair to say he supervised the rise of the M/I Complex; but if it steamrolled the Kennedy family, what chance did Eisenhower ever have?

The same people that were backing Nixon, BTW, had earlier tried to have Roosevelt deposed by military coup and would have succeeded but for one man.

9. Actually Ike was a pretty damn good president
Initiated the interstate highway system, the largest public works project to that time. Started up NASA. Integrated the schools in Arkansas. Proposed civil rights legislation that ended up being defeated by Democrats. All this after extricating us from the Korean War.
And trying to blame him for Hudson going out of business is a bit ludicrous. People wanted cars that looked fresh ever year or two and Hudson didn't offer that.

10. There were versions of this in 1980s Britain,
Thatcher is my Shepherd
I cannot find work
She maketh me lie down on park benches
She leadeth me beside still factories
She restoreth my Faith in the Labour Party
My expenses over-runneth my salary
Surely poverty and hardship shall follow me all the days of the Tory Party
Yea I walk through the valley of unemployment
I shall be unemployed, hungry and homeless
Forever and ever.
Amen.

(and similar).

Apparently the original version was about Herbert Hoover, and it was later adapted to other leaders.
