PELOSI: "The party is over for the Bush Administration"

Politics up to the Minute
by Mark Halperin | Sunday, September 21, 2008
Pelosi Statement on Legislation to Address Crisis in Financial Markets

Washington, D.C. — Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today as Congress and the White House work to craft legislation to address the crisis in our financial markets:

“Congress will respond to the financial markets crisis by taking action this week in a bipartisan manner that will protect the taxpayers’ interests. The Administration’s $700 billion proposal does not include the necessary safeguards. Democrats believe a responsible solution should include independent oversight, protections for homeowners and constraints on excessive executive compensation.

“We will not simply hand over a $700 billion blank check to Wall Street and hope for a better outcome. Democrats will act responsibly to insulate Main Street from Wall Street.

“As we proceed to deal with this crisis, this is clear recognition that the party is over for the Bush Administration’s anything goes, failed economic policies that have damaged our economy, undermined the middle class and further pointed out the need for a New Direction.”

Too bad. Nancy's been the one up dancing on the table for the past two years.
Hi Midori.

I think it's past time she puts her clothes back on and goes home.

29. Actually she couldn't have.
The Dems (as you know) controlled the House, but not the Senate.

That's right; the Dems have not and do not control the Senate (yet). Without the Senate, the Dems have not been able to stop the GOP in the White House and their sleeper cell in Congress.

But, with this election coming up and this "bail out" leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouths (even the freepers it seems) people who have never watched CSPAN (the way DUers do) will be taking this particular vote personally.

You don't think this vote will have an effect on the election?

The GOP-controlled media has been avoiding their favorite old canard that "there's no difference between the parties". It hasn't been (re)pulled out of Karl Rove's ass for this election cycle, but I expect it will be now. I just hope with less than 45 days to go, the people will remember how they got to the position where they are now, what "solution" the criminals who started this mess are suggesting and maybe show a little compassion to future generations by doing the right thing and stopping it from happening.

I don't think Pelosi is stupid. This is truly the first time the Dems have a clear advantage; all the Dems (Pelosi included) damn well better listen to us.

(BTW, I read that Obama does not support the GOP's billionaire's bailout and Pelosi has shown willingness to follow his lead. For, me that's a good sign)

18. You do understand how impeachment works, don't you?
That impeachment by itself does not remove anybody from office. It sure didn't remove Clinton. Trial after impeachment is by the Senate and anybody who can count knows there would not be 67 votes to convict any more than there was with Clinton.

37. yes but if the House had pursued impeachment
the Bush-Cheney lies and crimes might have been exposed to the low information Johns and Janes out there and maybe the approval rating of Congress wouldn't be lower than Bush's and the current POTUS race would not be so close -- racism notwithstanding!

Being the minority in 1993 didn't stop repukes from constant attack mode!

63. That isn't the point. The point was to get investigations and testimony
under oath going and if the House sought impeachment then it would go to the Senate. It was a matter of getting all the treason and war crimes on record. Frankly if Pelosi had done her job and exposed all of that, I think they would have had a Senate majority to convict. By that time there wouldn't be a Republican who would risk their career by not convicting. They didn't with Clinton because the charges were frankly stupid.

Thanks for nothing. You're the leader of a do nothing Congress that has given Bushco everything they've wanted so far. Why stop now?

not to have caused a great big stink at what **** and and company has been doing these 8 years.

If you and the other spineless politico's in Washington had screamed at the top of your lungs, the American people would have been behind you with armies of citizens demanding, perhaps even marching in protest condemning this run-away administration.

It is too late for you to save your political soul. Look what your indifference has brought to us. AND we still have several more months to get through.

As far as I'm concerned, for many people, jail should be on the table. Young or old, we citizens are stuck paying for all of you inept, useless, spineless people, and we have no choice or say about it.

Yes, there are good Senators and Reps but they are overshadowed by those within the good-old-boy network that shuts up at anything that might rock the political status quo.

5 to 6 weeks to collect a measly unemployment check and now we bail out giant corporations because of your ineptitude. November can't come quickly enough.

One of the qualifications for public office should be a mental acuity exam, a spine with a will do what the people want. That idea went down the sewer years ago.
